POETRY ,
The Wine Cup.
I will quaff the sparkling wine , said Health ,
It gives new life to the soul ,
And wit will flash like gems, of wealth ,
As it yields to its hisrh cqntrol ;
He drank: but disease 'hacl touched the cup ,
And fever bnrned in each veil) ,
Wit in the pqisqn was swallowed up,
And madness consumed the brain.
Beauty came next , with her rose-hucd lip,
And thu love-li ght in her eye.
And she bent o'er the tempting fount to sip,
And gather new brillian cy ;
But poison was mingled with its waves ,
A poison that cannot fail ;
And her eye dropped like the eye of slaves ,
And her li p grew thin and pale.
And Youth in its untaught gladness sprang,
Like an eatrlc in its flight ,
And his laugh-like music breathings rung,
As he quaffed the nectar bright :
He drank , and the poison reached his heart ,
And he bowed his feeble head ,
And turned in shame from the world apart
The life of his soul had fled '
And Love, wjth his soft , earessino- tone
And his warm, persuasive li p '
And a glance that nqne but Love hath known ,
Ocr the chalice bent to sip:
His tone was vile as he turned awav ,
And his li p with'passion burned , "
And bjs glance fell 'neath the glance of day,
And virtu e his presence spurned!
With lofty bro.Ny, and an eye of flame,
And an eagle heart within ,
Genius stood forth in his garb of fmne,
Where the tempter sought to win ;
He drank , and the mighty soul bowed down ,
Like a tree beneath the" blast ,
And the lofty name and the laurel crown ,
Jn the syren cup were cast !
01) God ! how long shall this lava flood
Overwhelm our glorious land *
Up. sluggard , up, lest a brother 's blood
Be demanded at th y ha nd ;
Up, up, thou qf the sleep ing heart ,
Arise, with new life warmed ;
fh y Gqd is Lovrc, go forth—thou art
" Jn God's own image formed !"
MORAL READINGS
Hc:uliiij i the Scriptures,
The v»lue and desirableness of the art of reading
well , are never mare striking ly suggested than when
it is emp loyed in reading the .Scri ptures a|oud. In
the sacred desk, or in the social meeting, or at do-
inestio worship, how greatl y it i|i]{]g tp the beauty
and impressivencss of the service , if the grand and
beautiful phraseology of the saom) won], be given
forth by a tasteful psacler. (Jorjrt reading is often
the best commentary. The shades of thought can
be expressed by the inflection and emp hasis of 11
reader that enters into the meaning and spirit of a
passage, with a clearness that no exposition would
improve. Wh«n enunciated, riglitlv , anil clothed
with right feeling, what is sq striking am) impres-
sive as the wqhJs of the spirit ? IJqw inexcusabl y
neg ligent are most of our pul pit readers. How lit-
tle of the divine force q( the Pible is realized hi
this part of public worshi p. Am] at the fireside,
where assembled children listen to the dail y perusal
of the Bible , haw much its solemnity and atlraclive-
ness would be enhanced, if read clearl y, intelli gibl y
and wel). No one car, read well who does not read
understanding ly. The passage to be read at church
ought to be first studied, and its meaning and spir-
it clearl y possessed. It would not then be an un-
meaning service , as it now too often is.
Few men in public or private life escape the
tongue of scandal. There is a propensity in human
nature to, caver its piyn d.efepts by prating of the
misdeeds of others. And it is not easy for the
Christian even, always to hold his pi-ace when idli'
tongues are dealing with his fair name. If wise,
however , be will do so, and let a lie die a natural
death , ins tead of galvani sing if into life by tlje bat-
tery of passion ,
There is much good sense and sound philosop hy
in the following extract from the private note of ti
valued correspondent :—'I like ,' he writes, 'the sto-
ry of the blacksm ith who was reftjnested to bring a
suit for slander. He snid he coflld go into his shop
and hammer oqt a better character in sis months,
than fill the courts in Christeritom could give him,
I lately saw a piece which &\t\ me great and out-
rageous wrong, So I sat do#n and wrote si* prac-
tical pieeos for the press, ar/| lot the thing pass, ]
found this the best way of/keep ing my temper , ]
think; it more likel y tq gyve me a fair name with
good people, than those everlasting defences.'

¦Being firmer than the Capper Bolts , they bear much
harder 'driving ; and their composition prevents the
