The BarnstableMiddleSchoolgirlssoftball teamremainsundefeated after awell-played game against Mashpee Tuesday. In a match rife with stolen bases and solid hits,BMS prevailedwith animpressive score of 16-8 against the Falcons. On the mound, Lindsay Grover pitched a \ '.m., a ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ « ¦ I great game that included countless strike- outs and anumber of terrific saves resulting in outs against Mashpee. Backing Grover's skillful pitching were a number of strong hits when BMS came to bat. Allie Liimatainen singled early in the game to right center field before moving on to steal first and second. Aleft-field hit from Harley Mills brought in the run. Kristin Moran and Demi Miskiv pulled off a double steal in the first inning, followed quickly by the team's first triple steal that brought home Moran for another run. Mashpee attempted a rally in the third inning but proved no match for formidable Barnstable. After a scoreless fourth inning, the BMS bats exploded again, bringing the lead to 15-5. Lauren Logan reached first base on awalk in the fifth and soon made her way around the bags, stealing second, third and home. Keveney Pauze-Henderson also stole home for another tally, while teammate Jacqui DiCicco brought in Sarah Greene. DiCicco scored moments later on a double from Rachel Lynn, who stole home for the 15th run. Defensively, BMS was on-target for much of the game, with good throws and quick thinking. Shae Costello and Pauze-Henderson were adept in forcing outs, as were DiCicco, Gro- ver, andAveryFarnham.Grover andFarnham wowed the crowd in the fourth with a rare 2-1-5 put out. With their victory over Mashpee, BMS improved its record to 3-0. "Considering the team's long period of inactivity," said head coach Ted Guazzaloca. "This game was definitely a keeper." Stealing home Wet weather puts a damper on local sports By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.com The recent spate of rainy weather on Cape Cod has thrown local high school sports schedules completely off track. In the past two weeks Barnstable High School has can- celled nearly all sports events, with games finally being played on still-damp fields on Tuesday, Wednesday and yesterday. The constant cancellations and thwarted attempts to reschedule have wreaked havoc with teams, coaches, and especially Steve Francis, BHS athletic director. "It's very stressful because people don't know even at the last minute whether they'll have a game," he said. Such was the case on Tuesday when Mother Nature reared her waterlogged head yet again. An early morning thunderstorm soaked playing fields further, forcing the cancellation of baseball, lacrosse and tennis. Later in the afternoon, with a girls varsity softball game and two middle school games planned, the skies again opened up, leaving many would-be attendees wondering if they should chance it. "It gets the kids uptight , the coaches uptight," said Francis. While those games went on, many others were stillin need of rescheduling, a daunting task with the school year only a month from its end. "You have to make every attempt to get gamesin,"Francis said. "But, for example, there are no extra dates left for girls lacrosse." Should a team find itself truly up a creek, Francis notes that the MIAA does allow for special circumstances in re- gards to tournament play. "Coaches can petition the MIAA not to count the games they didn't get in due to weather," he explained. In spite of the rain-induced stresses, Francis is quick to remind folks that the Barnstable area certainly isn't as bad off as harder-hit regions to the north where some playing seasons may be forced into an early end. "There are some schools that are way out of whack," he said. The good news is that at press time the sun was shining across our region and there was a good breeze to help dry courts and fields. A glance at the highschoolsports.net Web site confirmed that games were finally happening. Play ball! Rain, rain, stay away! Varsity softball takes a hit By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwanng@barnstabiepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT MANWARING PHOTO SEND ME HOME - Kristen Logan readies herself for the pitch while teammate Erin Hurd prepares to run. Hurd scored one of Barnstable's three runs on a passed ball in the first inning ina tough match against Somerset. In their first game in more than a week, the BHS girlsvarsity softball team was defeated by Somerset 12-3 Tuesday. Although the game began withBarnstable up 2-0, the visitors quickly rallied before surging ahead of the Raiders. A sixth-inning home run by Kourtney McNamara helped, but Somerset dominated the still-damp field. Lisa Robertson went two for four with a double and an RBI that allowed Kristen Logan to cross the plate , while Erin Hurd went one for two and scored on a passed ball in the first. "Our bats came alive late in the game," said head coach Jen Police. "But it was too late." A major factor in Barnstable 'sloss was certainly the recent spell of rainy weather. "What was difficult for us was that we've been inside for a week and a half with no live pitching," explained Police. "It's not the same." The coach also noted that Somerset had several powerful batters that BHS wasn't prepared for. "They had a couple of really great hitters in their three and four spots who hit well," she said. "That was the damage right there. If we had shut them down, it would have been a closer game." Police added Somerset to the BHS roster to keep her team on top of their game. "I picked them up just to keep playing at that level," she said. "Next time, we'll be prepared and throw a little differently."
