most, and to attract new cus-
tomers by featuring products
that have interested other
first-time buyers. Youwillalso
be able to scale back products
that are less interesting.
A drilldownreport williden-
tify which products in your
mix are contributing the
most to your bottom line, and
the best sellers don't always
contribute the most revenue.
Of course, you would want to
focus your marketing effort on
the products that generate
the most revenue overall, and
a low-margin item that is an
easy close may be more profit -
able than ahigher marginitem
that is less popular if the sales
volume is sufficient. An addi-
tional benefit isthe possibility
of cross-sells and up-sells.
A customer interested in an
item available at three qual-
ity levels (good/better/best )
might prefe r a higher level
if he was aware that it was
available (up-selling). That
same customer might want
accessories to go along with
the product (cross-selling) .
The most critical part of a
Web site sale is the checkout
process. Thisisthe most likely
place for a visitor to abandon
a shopping cart, and it is cru-
cial that the business owner
know exactly where and why.
Perhaps navigation becomes
confusing, or the form fields
are intimidating. Whatever
the reason , using click-by-
click analysis, good business
intelligence software should
be able to locate the exact field
that the visitor abandoned.
This helps pinpoint areas
in the Web site design that
need improvement. After the
changes are made, conversion
rates can be measured again
to gauge the effects of the
changes.
Software that performs
these analyses and more is
widely availablecommercially.
These programs range from
shareware that is relatively
inexpensive to custom pack-
ages costing thousands of
dollars to create and can carry
a hefty monthly usage fee.
Their capabilities and ease
of use vary almost as widely,
but most smallbusinesses can
adapt an "off-the-rack" pack-
age to their needs. Several will
be reviewed in next month's
column.
