MORAL READINGS. I he heart lias . -ifit'ctions ihat never die. The roug h rubs of tlie world cannot obliterate tliem.— They are the memories of home—earl y home.— There is mag ic in the sound. There is lhe old tree under which the li ght hearted boy swunjr many a d:iy ; yonder the river in which he learned to swin; ; I hero the house in which he knew a parent 's pro- tection ; nay, there is the room in which he romped with brother and sister , long since , alas ! laid in the yard in which he must pooh be gathered , over shad- owed by yon old church , whither , wiih a joyous I roop like himself , he has often followed his parente t o worshi p with , and hear the good old man who ministered at the altar . Wh y, even lhe very school house , associated in youthful days with thoug hts of (rusks , now conies to bring pleasant remembrances of many occasions thai call forth some generous exhi- bitions of noble traits of human nature. There, if "here he learned to feel some of his first emotions. There, perchance , he first met the being who, by her love and tenderness in life, has made a home for himself , happ ier than that which his childhood knew- There are certain feelings of humanitv , and those, too, among the best , that can find an appropriate place for their exercise onl y by one's own fiieside . There is a privacy of that which it was a species of desecration to violate. He who seeks wantonl y to invade it , is neither more nor less than a villain i and hence there exists no surer test of the debase- ment of morals in a community, than the disposition to tolerate in any mode, the man who invades the sanctity of private life. In the tin moil of the woi ltl let there be at least one spot where the poor man may find affection and confidence which me not to be abused .— PD r. Hawkes. lhe followin g "gem" we copy from the original in the possession of a gentleman in thin city, as re- ceived fro m an absent one , the partner of his j oys Hiid sorrows.— [Christian Intelli gencer. A Blessing. May the blessings o( God await thee , and the pun of glory shine round th y bed ; and may the g,it« of plen ty, honor anil happ iness ever be open to thee ; may no sorrow distress th y da _\a ; may no grief dis- turb , th y ni ghts; may the pillow of pence kiss th y cheek , and the pleasures of imag ination attend th y dreams. And when length of years makes thee tired of earthl y joys, and the curtain of death gentl y closes around th y last sleep of human existence ,may the Angel of God attend th y bed , and take care that the exp iring lamp of life shall not receive one rude blast , to hasten on its extinction. Home Affections. A woman has her husband's fortunes in her pow- er, because she may, or may not , as she pleases,con- form to his circumstances. This is" her first duty, and oug ht to be her pride. No passion for luxury or disp lay ought for a moment to tunipt her to devi- ate in the least degree from this line of conduct.— Any other course is wretchedness itself , and inevi- tabl y leads to ruin. Nothing can be more miserable than the strugg le to keep up appearances. II it could succeed well , it would cost more than it is worth ; as it never can , its failure involves the deepest mortification. Some of the subiimest exhi- bitions of human virtue have been made, by women , who have been preci pitated suddenl y from wealth and splendor to absolute want. Then a man 's for- tunes are in a manner in the hands of his wife, inas- much as his own power of exertion depends on her. His moral strength is inconceivabl y increased by her sympath y, her counsel , her aid. Sho can aid him immensely bv her rcli <-vim>: him of every care which sue is capable of taking upon herself. If she be prompted by true affection and good sense she will perceive when hi* spirit is borne down and overwhelmed. She , of all human beings, ca n best minister to its nvixlit. If it be harrasscd and worn to a morbid irritability, her gentle tones steal over it widi a soothing more potent than most exquisite music. If every enterprise be dead , an d hope itself almost «xtingnised , her patience and fortitude have the pow..,- to rekindle - them in the heart , an d he Kgain goo fd,.,|, t0 renew ,|l(J PI ,,.oimU,r wj,|, ,ne toils and troub' es of i;/e A Wife's Influence on her Husband's Fortune. If yon are tiffin g and loose in your conversation—no matter if you are as beautiful as an angel—you have no attr acti on for them. Young ladies sadl y miss it , who labor to im- prove their outward looks, w hile , they best ow not a thoug ht on their minds.
