They all worked very hard and we can be proud of their effort. The mathematics portion of this assessment will be given during the three-week period starting on May 15. Please do not plan any non-emergency medical appointments or family days during that time. GRADE 1ARTIST IN RESIDENCE. During the week of May 22, Jeff Daviswillbe visiting all of the first grade classrooms as part of our 2005/2006 Artist in Residence series. He willbe usingmusic and storytellingto teach students about the history of our country. He is one of the nation's foremost perform- inginterpreters and collectors of traditional American Folk Music and has performed and presented all over the country. CELEBRATION OF LEARNING: The annual Hyannis West Celebration of Learning will be held this year on Wednesday,May 24th. The school will be open to families that night from 6:00 to 8:00. Keep that date clear in your calendar and come and see some of the work your children have been doing this year. We will be serving pizza to all of the families that attend. There will also be a "prize giveaway" that night with some great gifts, including a pair of Red Sox tickets. PTO NEWS: The Papa Johns Pizza "Papa Bucks" fundraiser ends this month. John Coutinho samples a garden salad at the Stop & Shop at Marstons Mills NUTRITION EDUCATION: Under the di- rection of Ms. Karin Schulz, specialist for Health Education, fourth grade students are responding to the challenge given in the Barnstable Public Schools Wellness Policy 2006 asking citizens to help to develop, implement, monitor and review the town's. district-wide nutrition policies. After review- ing federal guidelines for healthy meals and snacks, the children recently toured the Marstons Mills Stop & Shop to analyze the nutritional value of fresh, frozen and packaged foods and drinks. They plan to write and publish a "cookbook" for other students with nutrition facts included and to make a presentation at a future Barnstable School Committee meeting to give their suggestions for developing and implement- ing the town's nutrition policies. HISTORY COMES ALIVE: Cotuit Elementary 3rd graders recently toured the Centerville Historical Museum, which has an outstand- ing collection of historic costumes, maritime and military artifacts, quilts, Crowell birds, and 18th and 19th century decorative arts. The children especially enjoyed the displays of Revolutionary and Civil War uniforms and weapons and the collection of children'stoys and dolls from these historical periods. AUTHOR, AUTHOR. Funded by the Cobb Trust Fund, the Cotuit students recently enjoyed a pesentation by Martha Zschock , Author of children'sbooks including the se- ries "JourneyAround... ".The students were especially impressed by her account of the process of researching, writing and editing a book , including illustrations. The author encouraged them to edit and rewrite their own work as a way to develop and improve their writing skills.
