NUTRITION EDUCATION: Under the di-
rection of Ms. Karin Schulz, specialist for
Health Education, fourth grade students
are responding to the challenge given in the
Barnstable Public Schools Wellness Policy
2006 asking citizens to help to develop,
implement, monitor and review the town's.
district-wide nutrition policies. After review-
ing federal guidelines for healthy meals and
snacks, the children recently toured the
Marstons Mills Stop & Shop to analyze
the nutritional value of fresh, frozen and
packaged foods and drinks. They plan to
write and publish a "cookbook" for other
students with nutrition facts included and to
make a presentation at a future Barnstable
School Committee meeting to give their
suggestions for developing and implement-
ing the town's nutrition policies.
HISTORY COMES ALIVE: Cotuit Elementary
3rd graders recently toured the Centerville
Historical Museum, which has an outstand-
ing collection of historic costumes, maritime
and military artifacts, quilts, Crowell birds,
and 18th and 19th century decorative arts.
The children especially enjoyed the displays
of Revolutionary and Civil War uniforms and
weapons and the collection of children'stoys
and dolls from these historical periods.
AUTHOR, AUTHOR. Funded by the Cobb
Trust Fund, the Cotuit students recently
enjoyed a pesentation by Martha Zschock ,
Author of children'sbooks including the se-
ries "JourneyAround... ".The students were
especially impressed by her account of the
process of researching, writing and editing
a book , including illustrations. The author
encouraged them to edit and rewrite their
own work as a way to develop and improve
their writing skills. More information about
the program, including photos of the visit ,
are on the school's Web page.
