Raiders drop the ball Boys varsity baseball falls to Marshfield KATHLEEN SZMIT MANWARING PHOTOS UH-OH - Zach Wilson grimaces as he smacks another pop fly, this one landing on a parked car. Pop-ups and errors were behind the boys' defeat by Marshfield. Blame it on the weather. In a game rife with errors, the BHS boys varsity baseball team suffered defeat at the bats of Marshfield on Wednes- day in an Old Colony League match. Defensively the team wasn't their best with dropped and missed balls proving costly. Although Barnstable man- aged to connect with the ball at bat , the results were a number of easily caught pop- flies and fouls. Adam White turned in a powerful performance on the mound in spite of giving up eight hits and three earned runs to Marshfield. Tim Norton went 1 for 2 with a double and a walk for the Raiders, who slipped to 7-5 for the season and 2-3 in the league. Next up is a trip to Dar- mouth where they face the Indians on Monday. The next home game willbe Wednesday against Taunton. KSM ! W^:&£3iX5g£ kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.com Sporting recollections In the year 2006, you would think that a woman could have just about any position she wanted and no one would even blink. Sadly, that isn't so. In spite of gender-equality proposals, equal rights for equal work, and so forth, people still raise their eyebrows upon hearing a woman has what was once thought of as a man's profession. How do I know this? I am a woman and I am also a sports writer. See! There went your eyebrows. When I cameintothisposition at the end of February I had some idea of what I was getting myself into, though I admit I felt daunted. Though I considered myself something of a closet jock, my sports lingo definitely needed a brush-up. Nonetheless, Ijumped into the local sports pool eagerly, anxious to get my feet wet. While I have yet to actually get myfeet wet Ihave darnnear lost an eye (dodgeball), dropped my camera in the bay (sailing), and broken my ankle (note: never wear heels when covering lacrosse). I have also been questioned directly and indirectly about my job. At a recent high school track meet, the parent of two of the runners was stunned when told I was the sports writer for the Patriot. "What?" he bellowed, then added a gruff, "Really!" It seemed to be a total shock to him that a woman would even know about sports, let alone could write about sports. Others have been much more polite, but no less shocked. I've run the gamut of reactions from smothered giggles (thanks, Dad) to "Wow, that's so cool!" It is cool. I love my job. Because of my position, I get to visit local high schools and watch incredibly talented stu- dent athletes make their marks on the playing field rather than the back wall at the mall. I get to see dazzling skating perform ances by the likes oi Rebecca Hubbard and Kara McDonald. I get to watch the BHS boys varsity lacrosse team roll right over their oppo- nents. I have the privilege of reporting on the undefeated BHS girls tennis team. I saw first-hand the pitching power of Tashauna Ashmeade of the BHS girls varsity Softball team. Through my job I am getting to know some of the best and brightest throughout Barnstable. In a world where the norm is hearing more about the awful things kids do, it is wonderful to see for myself that there are many who are awfully good. Several months into things now I am still getting the oc- casional strange look and my sports lingo still needs help, but I am having a ball. Lacrosse ball, baseball, dodgeball, you name it! I am a woman. I write sports and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Uut oi l he Box Raiders keep rolling Varsity boys lax continues strong season By Kathleen Szmil Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstabiepatriot.conn After dropping one of their last away games, the BHS boys varsity lacrosse team came back fighting thisweek, netting a victory against Norwell. Last Friday, the Raiders faced Scituate in their last trip across the bridge this season. In spite of a very physical, well-played game, the Sailors defeated the Raid- ers 16-17. Head coach Greg Clements cited face-offs as a problem during the match,particular- ly as the game progressed. Although BHS was ahead 6-2 early on, Scituate scored seven goals in the finalseven minutes of the second quar- ter, leaving the score at 9-7 at the half. "They ended the first half with three or four fast-break goals that broke us down," said Clements. "I wasn't sure the boys would respond." They did respond , greatly narrowing the score during the second half of the game, but Scituate saw an opening and took it, coming out one up in the end. On Monday the team re- turned home for a match against Norwell. It was a hard-fought league win for the Raiders, who overtook Norwell 9-8. Norwell got offto a4-l lead over BHS duringthe first half before the Raidersralliedand gained control of the game. With five minutes to go in the first half, the boys took a 5-4 lead. Norwell answered with two goals of their own before Tim Flynn tied it for BHS with just :29 on the clock. The game remained tied at 6-6 until close to the final quarter when Norwell took a brief 8-6 lead. Not to be outdone, BHSfired back with three quick goals in less than a minute. On defense, "Nasty" Nate Camelio was a tremendous asset to the team, bringing the ball up the field success- fully twice in a row. Scoring for the Raiders were Brett Serriello with four,TimFlynnwithtwo, and Andy Morse, MikeDevlin and Cam Lacey each with one. GoaltenderBrendanBearse had 14awesome saves, while Justin Bearse, Flynn, Tyler Hall, and Corey Oberlander were the loose ball leaders. Next up for the boys is a home gametomorrow against King Philip Regional. Undefeated tennis team unstoppable By Kathleen Szmit Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN SZMIT MANWARING PHOTOS FLAWLESS FOCUS - Madison DeMello keeps her eye on the ball in a doubles match with Jess Francis. The two swept past Marshfield 6-3, 6-4 during Wednesday's OCL championship victory. Maintaining their season- long focus, even in the wake of a bit of coaching drama, the BHS girls tennis team bagged their lOIh Old Colony League championship vic- tory Wednesday, soundly defeating Marshfield 5-0. Although the match was set to begin at 4 p.m., Marshfield's coach stalled the start repeatedly, appar- ently claiming the courts were too damp. When the team finally took up their racquets, the air was heavy with a chilly mist. That didn't sway the Raider women. In singles matches #1 player Kate Donnelly triumphed with 6-3, 6-2 scores and #2 seed Chealsey Giatrelis turned out a 6-0 and 6-4. Jess Whelan was also impressive with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Doubles matches were also tremendous with Barnstable simply smoking their opponents. Lauren Donnelly and Kortney Kel- ley won with 6-2, 6-3 and Kess Francis and Madison DeMello scored 6-3, 6-4. "These girls have worked really hard and it shows," said head coach Hedley Smith. With only five games left in the season, the team remains undefeated at 13-0 for the year and 5-0 in the league. Next up is a trip to Old Rochester High School this weekend, where the women will compete in the MIAA individual singles and doubles competition. Raider women earn 10th OCL championship The award for Most Im- proved Team goes to: BHS boys varsity volleyball. In spite of a3-0lossto North Quincy on Monday, the team showed tremendous improve- ment from the start of the season. Volleys were longer, players demonstrated much greater skill and were quicker getting at the ball. Bruno Cunha had 10 kills and Matt Deluga had five great digs in the matches, whileMike Deluga was a driv- ing voice in encouraging the fledgling team. Alex Pober and Rob Ban- croft showed determination at the net and the team as a whole played a much more cohesive game. Barnstable next faces King Philip Regional tomorrow, with the next home game on Tuesday against Bourne. I T aunton's Tigers were ferocious on Monday, trounc- ing the BHS girls varsity softball team 6-0 in an Old Colony League match. After roaring ahead with an early lead , Taunton held the Raiders at bay for the remainder of the game, allowing only four hits. Seana Coleman, Jes- sie Goode, Erin Hurd and Meg Fligg connected with the ball for BHS but weren't able to bring in a run. Impressive defensively was BHS shortstop Kris- ten Logan, who turned out a super double play. Barnstable is 6-6 for the season and 1-4 in the league. They hope to face New Bedford on Monday, weather permitting.
