Coast Guard
Museum opens
second season
this Thursday
The
Coast Guard
Heritage Museum at
the Trasyer is enter-
ing its second year with a
couple of new things, and
we're not talking about the
exhibits (although those
are new, as well).
Most immediately,
visitors to the Barnstable
Village landmark willnotice
the well-versed man will-
ing to share stories and
passion for the U.S. Light-
house Service. He's new
curator Doug Bingham of
Raynham, whose resume
was made for a museum
all about the Coast Guard
Service on Cape Cod and
its nearby watery regions.
Among other things, he is
the former historian of the
USCG Lightship Sailors
Association (1999-2005),
and a founding member
and long-time volunteer
with American Lighthouse
Foundation.
The other new feature for
the museum is its official
non-profit status.
The museum opens
Thursday as part of the
county-wide Maritime
Week, commencing its sum-
mer schedule of Thursday
through Saturday hours
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This week, Bingham and
other volunteers could
be found sorting through
boxes and assembling dis-
plays for this year.
Among the features are
displays of lighthouses
many of which are long
gone; a large exhibit of
the now extinct lightships
called "Floating Light-
houses," an exhibit of the
Coast Guard's work boats
called "Blackships," which
include tenders, dredges ,
and other support vessels
used t>y the Coast Guard
One of the prized ex-
hibits this year is the Vice
Admiral Lyndon Spencer
Collection. Admiral Spen-
cer was one of the most
decorated Coast Guard
officers who participated in
the Invasion of Normandy
on D-Day, coordinating the
landing at Utah Beach. His
exploits were praised by
General Dwight Eisenhow-
er and Spencer was deco-
rated by the Free French
Government. Spencer di-
rected the landing of Army,
Navy and Coast Guard
forces and equipment on
Utah Beach. His ship was
the Bayside.
Admiral Spencer spent
part of his distinguished
career as a member of the
Coast Guard Group Woods
Hole in the 1940s.
Admission for children
10 and under is free. Active
Duty Coast Guardsmen are
also admitted free. Admis-
sion for all others is $3. Bus
tours are welcome. There
will be a surcharge for
special events to be an-
nounced.

TERRORISM TRUTHS -10th Congressional District candidate Jeff Beatty,
an anti-terrorism expert, helicopter pilot and former Delta Force oflicer,
FBI and CIA agent prepares to deliver a terrorism slide show to members
of the Barnstable Republican Town Committee earlier this week.
Any similarity between 10th
Congressional District candi-
date Jeff Beatty and James
"007" Bond is purely coinci-
dental.
Beatty is the real thing.
The Harwich Republican ,
whoaimsto unseat Democrat-
ic U.S. Rep. William Delahunt ,
reallywasshot down and badly
injured in action while piloting
aBlackhawk helicopter; really
was aDelta Force commander;
really did serve with FBI and
CIA counter- and anti-terror-
ism units; really was targeted
for assassination in a foreign
country and really does run an
international business dealing
with major security issues.
That briefly was the cur-
riculum vitae offered by the
54-year-old adventurer to some
50 people at a Barnstable
Republican Town Committee
meeting Monday in the con-
ference room of Poyant Real
Estate on Barnstable Road in
Hyannis.
And if Beatty can capture
votes as he captivated this
week's audience with a slide
show and quick read of "Ter-
rorism 101,"he could be a for-
midable political foe testing
Delahunt' sincumbent bid for
a sixth two-year term - even
though Beatty is running
as a Republican , the party,
according to most national
pundits , most vulnerable in
the mid-term balloting.
"Don't let the sleight-of-hand
crowd make you believe this
election is about (President
George ) Bush," Beatty told
the partisan audience. "This
is not a referendum on Bush.
This is a congressional elec-
tion," he said, implying that
it is about replacing "cookie-
cutter " congressmen, not the
president.
Beatty told the audience
last night that he has already
secured a place on the bal-
lot by turning in some 3,000
signatures while he needed
only 2,000. He urged audience
members "to help others (can-
didates) who need signatures
and are here tonight. "
That included Doug Bennett
of Nantucket,looking to unseat
C&I Sen. Robert O'Leary;
Will Crocker, who wants to
replace Demetrius Atsalis
as 2nd Barnstable District
state representative and Phil
Paleologos of New Bedford , a
diner owner hoping to unseat
Governor 's Councilor Carole
Fiola of Fail River.
Beatty spent most of his
30-minute presentation famil-
iarizing the audience with the
terrorist mentality and modus
operandi. He had to be asked
by an audience member what
it was he hoped to accomplish
as a congressman.
"Anoverhaul of Congress,"he
replied,to include "term limits
and campaign finance reform."
He said too many congress-
men spend a lifetime in office ,
which, he noted , was not the
intent of the Constitution 's
authors.
As aninternational business-
man for the last 15 years, he
said the Cape and South Shore
economies "are not what they
ought to be. There is not sig-
nificant business investment."
It'ssomething he would attend
to, he said.
And, for an expert in security.
he said homeland security
could be much better for less
cost. "I know what to do about
that." he said.
Asked what he thought ol
Bush'snomination of an active
general.AirForce Gen. Michael
Hayden to head the CIA, ht
said: "I'm comfortable with a
military man." but similar tc
his view of long-term congress-
men, said he wouldn't want tc
see only military men handling
the nation'ssecurity: "It needs
a mix, different viewpoints."

Family loss changes

"On behalf of my entire family,
Iwishto thank everyone for their
prayers, support , and sympathy
during this most difficult time
for our family," the Sandwich
Republican wrotein hismonthly
e-mail newsletter. "While we are
obviously still struggling with
the loss of Paige Victoria , we are
very appreciative for the friend-
ship of so many people."

Impeachment debate
is tonight
It sounds like a classic
match-up: Independent Con-
gressional candidate Peter
White calling for the impeach-
ment of President Bush , and
former Barnstable Selectman
Francis Broadhurst opposing
the action. They'll make their
cases at a free pubic forum
tonight at 7at Cape Cod Com-
munity College.
Perry and Turkington
on same page
Jeff Perry calls it a tax
credit and Eric Turkington
calls it a tax break , but both
agree that "An Act Relative to
Establishing Massachusetts
Land Conservation Incen-
tives"ought to get a favorable
recommendation from the
House Committee on Ways
