Warning Signs
You Need New
Brakes
They may not be items
you think about very often ,
but your brakes are one
feature on your car that
you should always make
sure are in top working
condition. Let's look at
how to know when you
need new brakes before
the day when you find
yourself rolling straight
through an intersection-
-or worse, into the rear of
the vehicle in front of you.
There are two types of
brakes: disc and drum.
Modern-day vehicles
either have front disc and
rear drum or four-wheel
disc brakes. Your owner's
manual will tell you which
type you have if you aren't
sure. Because of the
weight of the engine and
the force put on the front
of the vehicle when stop-
ping, the greatest wear is
to the front brakes, so they
need more frequent main-
tenance.
There are two ways to
check for brake wear on
disc brakes—by looking
and listening. First, check
for wear by looking at your
brake pad through your
wheel. On most cars, you
can see the pad in the
space between your wheel
rims. The outside pad will
be pressed against the
metal rotor. Generally, you
want at least 1/4-inch of
pad.
Have you ever heard a
high-pitched screeching
sound when you applied
your brakes? That's a
small metal shim, called
an indicator, that is telling
you need to replace your
pads. You should listen for
this sound (which is loud
enough to be heard in the
car with the windows up,
but not necessarily loud
enough to be heard over
the radio or air condition-
er) . If you hear it regularly,
make an appointment with
your mechanic.
One exception is if your
car has been sitting after
being exposed to water,
such as from snow or
washing it. The moisture
can cause a thin layer of
rust to develop on the
brake rotors. When you
first apply the brakes,
the pads pressing on the
rust-covered rotors may
cause a squeal until for a
few stops until the rust
wears off. Once it does, the
sound will go away.
Here are some other
signs of brake problems.
If you experience any of
these, you should pay a
visit to your repair shop as
soon as possible.
Reduced Responsiveness
or Fading
If your brakes are not as
responsive as they should
be or if the pedal "sinks"
toward the floor, this is an
indication of a leak in the
system. It could be an air
leak or a brake fluid leak.
One telltale sign of a brake
fluid leak is a small puddle
when the car is parked.
Brake fluid looks similar to
fresh motor oil, minus the
slimy feel.
Pulling
Pulling is a sign that the
brake linings are wear-
ing unevenly or that there
is foreign matter in the
brake fluid. You may need
a brake adjustment or to
have the fluid drained and
replaced.
Grinding or Growling
This metallic sound that
is usually loud and quite
startling, means that you
have worn off the pads or
worn them down, most
likely beyond replacement.
The grinding or growling
noise is actually the two
pieces of metal rubbing
together. This can score
your rotors, creating an
uneven surface. Do not
be surprised if your me-
chanic tells you
the rotors need
to be "turned," a
process that evens
out the rotor.
Vibration
A vibration or pulsating
in the brake pedal is of-
ten a symptom of warped
rotors. Warped rotors are
caused by severe braking
for long periods, such as
when driving down a steep
mountainside or when tow-
ing. Tremendous amounts
of friction are created
under these conditions,
heating up the rotors and
causing them to warp.The
vibration is felt because
the brake pads are not able
to grab the surface evenly.
If you find yourself drving
under these conditions,
make sure to downshift,
which will slow the en-
gine down and reduce the
pressure you need to apply
to your brakes, or to stop
periodically to allow your
brakes to cool off.
If you experience any of
theseconditions,don't delay
in calling you mechanic. If
you do, the next phone call
you make might be to j m

your insurance com- ttSBj
pany instead.
