As far as Cape Cod's gifts to an artist, he believes there is something important and elemental about the Cape, however endangered are its woods, beaches, the nautical life, the romance of beautiful old boats. He prizesits antiquities andits past. While most of America is caught up with to- day and tomorrow, "I like to paint old houses and empty shorelines, places man has touched , but not destroyed" he said. He accepts the many changes that have occurred in the Cape and Islands just in the last 10 years but stands strong in his statement: "What I paint ignores change." Julian Baird, president of Tree's Place, the prestigious Orleans gallery that markets Higham's work , recalls the year that artist asked the gallery to refrain from pre-selling his work. On the first morning of the Higham show, Baird and his wife arrived at the gallery early to find 45 to 50 people waiting at the front door. They gave the people numbers and let them in to look and buy, just one party at a time and one painting to a customer. Baird recalled: "When we got through the process, all but one painting had been sold, and we sold that one the night of the opening." The Cahoon Museum of American Art on Route 28 in Cotuit is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tom Higham will discuss his work at 11a.m. on May 16. Be Sure To Say Thanks' For Us... WhenYouPatronize OurAdvertisers! 1) 1) CONTINUED FROM PAGE C:1 willthey grow, Frog?" He pleads. "Soon, Toad. Soon." Unsure of when "soon" may be, Toad barks the order to grow at the seeds only to become stricken with guilt as he fears he's frightened them. In apology, Toad offers endlesskindnessto the seeds, even performing a comicalinterpretive dance for themthat had the crowd doubled over with laughter. When Frog and Toad get together on- stage, hilarity, tenderness and occasional mayhem ensue. The two friends weather everything, including an argument, with aplomb. Rounding out this wonderful show is a delightful hodgepodge of creatures that enhances the adventures of our funny friends. Nicky Blodgett, in the role of Snail, the languid letter carrier, is a riot. Not only does her character take forever to deliver Frog'sletter to Toad, she does so with awalkthat wouldbring a grinto the most stone-faced viewers. Along with Snail are Turtle, Moles, Squirrels, and a very cheeky Mouse that appears from Toad's cupboard just in time for freshly baked cookies. Each of the players bears a singing voice that simply, well, rocks. From Hopper's rich, velvety baritone to the well-blended harmonies of the ensemble, these are singers you want to listen to again and again, particularly during fantastic songslike "Get aLoad of Toad" and "Cookies." Providingexcellentinstrumentationfor the show are keyboardist Robert Wilder, drummer Brad Conant and on clarinet, saxophone and flute, Pat Riley. Costumes, designed by the artful Robin McLaughlin, are fabulous. Frog is resplendent in green over green over green, while Toad is plucky in shades of brown paisley.Wonderful touches in- clude Snail's pink antennae, the moles' sunglasses, and bold red on the birds. I want to know where Frog got his lime green topsiders! Directing this masterful musical is Terry Norgeot, with musical direction provided by Robert Wilder. Under their combined tutelage, this show evolves from a simple children's musical into a truly enchanting event. If you loved reading Frog and Toad books withyour children, thisisthe show for you. Even ifyou're unfamiliarwith the amphibiouspals,thisisamust-see event. When the curtain callcomes,I guarantee you'll be on your feet withthe rest of the crowd, wishing there was more. "A Year With Frog and Toad" will run through May 28 with performances on Friday and Saturday eve- nings at 7:30 (no show on May 26), and Sundays at 4 p.m. Two special matinees will be held at 4 p.m. on May 13 and 20.
