First Osterville
Maritime Festival
Mav 20
The first Osterville
Maritime Festival is sched-
uled for Saturday, May 20,
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with
events throughout the vil-
lage.
Festival organizers
promise the village will be
"soaked with events of his-
tory, heritage and fun for
all."
The day will be headlined
by tours and exhibits at the
Osterville Historic Society
& Museum, a lecture at the
Osterville Free Library by
Don Nelson of the Co-
tuit Oyster Company, and
a Pirate's Treasure Hunt,
sponsored by West Bay An-
tiques & Estate Sales and
Homeward Bound.
Mermaids are expected
to visit Bedroom I's and
rumors are that a "paw-
rade " of dogs (A Wagawi
Parade) in full sailor's rega-
lia will again take over Main
Street.
All the day's events will .
be accessible as an antique
trolley will run circuits
through the village and to
the museum.
Posters for the event have
been distributed (more
are at the printer) and the
Festival has been listed in
all Cape-wide calendars and
brochures coordinated by
the Cape Cod Chamber of
Commerce for the annual
Cape Maritime Days.
The detailed program of
events is still in develop-
ment and opportunities for
local shops to participat e
still exist.
Description of the
sponsored activities for
the Festival should be
e-mailed to Jim Powers at
jpowerandcompany@aol.
com as soon as possible
with images, visuals and
pictures.
Those in need of more
information about becom-
ing involved are asked to
contact Russ Nesbitt, the
Festival Committee Chair,
at Oyster Island Emporium
(508-428-5050) for more
details.

SWEET PLACE - Owners Pam Zibutis, left, and Beth 0 Neil, right,of Osterville Sundae News, finish
stacking papers by the candy counter.
Pam Zibutis and Beth
O'Neil of the Osterville Sun-
dae News are cabinetmakers,
and thereby hangs a tale of
linguistic trivia, according
to Pam. Their cabinets are
not the kind one hangs in a
kitchen. Nor are they the type
appointed by heads of state.
Theirs is what is more com-
monly known as a "frappe. "
"But in Rhode Island and
Southeastern Massachu-
setts," said Pam, " a frappe
is called a cabinet." To find
out why, one has to turn to
the Dictionary of American
Food and Drink to learn that
the refreshingly filling and
frothy blend of milk, syrup
and ice creamis distinguished
by Rhode Islanders from a
milkshake (blended milkand
syrup) and is so named from
the rectangular "cabinet" in
which older model mixers
were encased.
Besides vanilla, chocolate
and strawberry syrup, there
is also coffee syrup, a South-
eastern Massachusetts favor-
ite that aficionados consume
with a package of peanut
butter crackers called "nabs"
-short for Nabisco. "Acab and
a nab please," is frequently
heard there.
Accompanying the trivia
last week was the reality
that off-season "business is
good" and made possible
by the regular patronage
of the "wonderful people "
from Osterville Center'sretail
establishments, winter resi-
dents,neighborhood children
and assorted craftsmen who
stop by for lunch of beef stew,
sandwiches or marinated
veggie salad, among other
varying daily menu items,
saysPam. One might add that
Pam and Beth's good humor
and outgoing personalities
embellish the experience. "We
paid for good will, but we're
creating more of our own,"
Pam said with a smile.
A TV set sits behind the
gleaming wood counter with
seating for 10. "If the women
get here for lunchtime before
the men, it's the soaps. If the
men get here first , it's the
news," said Pam.
When three proper elder-
ly ladies from Connecticut
stopped by last week for sun-
daes and frappes , Pam asked,
tongue in cheek "You came all
the wayfrom Connecticut just
for our ice cream?" -which is
advertised as home made.
Matter of fact , no. "We were
just walking by and decided
to come in,"the ladies replied.
"We're here for a few days and
staying in West Yarmouth."
Pam and Beth, solid friends
since they waitressed at How-
ard Johnson'swhen they were
teenagers, have owned the
Sundae News at 3 Wianno
Ave. in downtown Osterville
only since August and have
added delightful banter and
repartee to their menu of ice
cream sundaes, frappes (from
the French ,/rapper, "to ice"),
breakfast and luncheon fare
and newspapers.
"We added magazines, and
penny candy that still costs
