BHS coach dismissed
Assistant steps
in for girls
lacrosse team
By Kathleen Manwaring
kmanwaring@barnstablepatnot.com
David Peros , BHS girls
lacrosse head coach , was
terminated last week by
Barnstable Public School's
interim superintendent Tom
McDonald. McDonald de-
clined to discuss specific
reasons for the decision.
Assistant coach Melanie
Van Kleeck will lead the
team through the end of the
season, according to athletic
director Steve Francis. Mem-
bers of the lacrosse team and
their families were informed
of Peros'stermination follow-
inglast Friday'sgame against
Cape Cod Academy.
Two weeks ago, informa-
tion regarding Peros was
provided to the Patriot.
During the course of re-
porting and checking that
information , elements of it
were shared with McDonald.
The interim superintendent
then conducted his own in-
vestigation , which included
a conversation with one of
Peros's former employers in
Virginia.
"I looked at all of the infor-
mation I had available and
made a decision based on
that information ," McDon-
ald said in an interview last
Thursday.
The Patriot contacted the
former employer, who was
not willing to discuss Peros
or his conversation with
McDonald.
According to a 2004 Cape
Cod Times article. Peros gave
up teaching in 1989 in order
to pursue what he referred
to as a "typical Cape Cod
lifestyle."
Peros started as the BHS
girls' lacrosse coach in 2004.
According to a 2004 story
in the Patriot , he has also
coached in Mashpee, Norwell
and Sacred Heart in Kings-
ton as well. He is listed as a
field hockey umpire on the
MIAA Web site and writes
a fishing column for the
Enterprise newspapers in
Falmouth. During the sum-
mer season, he operates a
fishing charter business out
of Pocassett.
Contacted shortly after his
termination , Peros stated
that he had no comments at
that time.
