"THE WALK":Would you please support "The
Walk"? On the week-end of May 20, 1am do-
ing the Avon 2 Day Walk for Breast Cancer.
1 need your help. Having my legs move for
2 days (26-39 miles) is not too difficult. As
a cancer survivor, I am very motivated to
do this for other patients and their families,
but each participant must raise a minimum
of $1,800 and this is why I'm asking for your
help. If you would liketo donate, please write
a check to Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and
send it to me here at BWB. I will mail it in
to the Avon Foundation that is sponsoring
this walk. I will be wearing a T-shirt, and
on it I'll write the names of people I know
whose lives have been affected by this dis-
ease. If you would like me to add any names
of those who have fought the cancer battle,
I'd be honored to have their names on the
shirt and keep them in my mind and heart
as I walk each mile. Know your support is
greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Sue Parke

CLASSROOM RAMBLES
Turing on
Bus Radio
On Wednesday, one school
bus, traveling three routes ,
will test the utility of an on-
board radio program that
includes news, entertainment,
announcements and adver-
tisements.
Transportation coordinator
Sandy Gifford told the school
committee Tuesday that the
pilot study will be conducted
for a week or two to learn
whether the system should be
expanded districtwide.
Mixed reviews
for food service
The school committee has
approved another one-year
contract for Chartwells to
run its meals programs , but
the company 's report was a
mixture of bitter and sweet.
Despite new offerings to en-
tice greater participation , the
system'sdeclining enrollment,
outdated equipment and the
need for a transition period
for employees contributed to
a deficit in this year 's opera-
tion of $180,183. The program
has run a deficit for years, but
the hope was that the new
vendor would start reducing
that substantially.
Chris Callahan, regional dis-
trict manager for Chartwells,
said that's exactly what the
company expects will hap-
pen in the next school year.
Buoyed by an increase in par-
ticipation this year of 12,000
additional meals served, with
175 fewer students, he said the
deficit could be cut in half in
the 2006- 07 year and perhaps
eliminated a couple of years
after that.
Another factor in making
this a tough year, Callahan
said, was that some of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
commodity offerings (cheese,
ground beef , and such) that
school lunch programs rely
on was diverted to the hur-
ricane-wracked South and
overseas to Iraq.
Lunch prices will be going
up, to $1.75 a day for kinder-
garten through Grade 4 and to
$2 for grades 5to 12. Breakfast
rates will rise from 75 cents to
a dollar. In all cases, fees for
"free and reduced" lunches
will not go up.
Thanks of a
grateful system
The school committee
approved Barnstable High
School's request to use 5
percent of the Lyndon Paul
Lorusso Charitable Memorial
Fund of $373,000 to award
$14,000 in scholarships. The
donors specified that 75 per-
cent of the fund be used by the
high school for scholarships
and 25 percent for professional
development.
"The Lorusso family has
been so generous to this com-
munity," said committee vice
chair Patrick Murphy. "Our
thoughts and prayers are with
them."
