BHS boys varsity is
anything but lax

Vacation week wasn't all
fun during games for the BHS
boys' varsity lacrosse team,
but they regrouped and came
back fighting this week.
Last Wednesday, the boys
faced the Arlington Spy Pon-
ders in an intense and close
game that resulted in a final
score of 12-11 with Arlington
the victors.
In spite of the loss the
Raiders played hard, nearly
overtaking the undefeated
Ponders. Mike Devlin picked
up four goals andthree assists,
while Chad Crocker contrib-
uted three goals. Freshman
Brett Serriello netted the first
varsitygoalof hisBHSlacrosse
career.
Playing solid defense was
Tyler Hall, Mike Donoghue,
and Corey Oberlander as long
stick midfielder. Goaltender
Brendan Bearse had a season
high of 18 saves.
Last Thursday, the team
traveled to Danvers to play
St.John'sPrep, ranked fourth
in Eastern Massachusetts by
laxpower.com.
BHS was no match for the
Eagles, losing 17-8. Neverthe-
less,theboysturned out asolid
performance.
Scoringfor Barnstable were
Crocker withthree,TimFlynn
with two, and Devlin, Andy
Morse and Serriello with one
each.
In spite of another 18 saves
from Bearse and excellent de-
fense from "Nasty"Nate Cam-
elio, Brad Sylvia and Henry
Hunt, the Eagles dominated
the third quarter, outscoring
the Raiders 7-2.
On Monday the Raiders fer-
riedtoNantucket withrevenge
on their agenda, the memory
of last year's loss still fresh in
their minds.
That mindset paid off as
Barnstable took the Whalers
14-5in a heated match.Flynn
had an impressive six goals,
whileDevlin and Serriello had
three each and Justin Bearse
had two.
The Raiders kept Nantuck-
et'sscoring opportunities to a
minimum.A great asset to the
defensive team has been the
addition of Mike Donoghue.
"Mike has done a great job
for us this year on defense,"
said coach Greg Clements.
"He creates a lot of pressure
for the opposition."
On Tuesday the Raiders
were at home againstMartha's
Vineyard, handing them their
first loss of the season with a
12-6 victory.
The Raiders rolled over the
Vineyardboys,dominatingthe
game with tight playing and
strong defense.
Barnstable took an early
lead at 5-0 after the first quar-
ter with Jake McGuinness
scoring his first three goals of
theyear.Flynnand Bearsealso
hadthree,whileMorsehadtwo
and Serriello had one.
"The team played with the
confidence andleadershipthat
we have been waiting for all
year,"said Clements. "It really
started yesterday on our trip
to Nantucket. I hope we can
bring that mentality to the
field on a consistent basis. If
we do, we'll be sure to make
some noise down the road."

The girls team remains undefeated at 7-0 for the season, and 3-0 in
their league. They face Martha's

Vineyard this afternoon.
The undefeated BHS girls
tennis team racked up two
more wins this week, bring-
ing their stats to 7-0 for
the season and 3-0 in the
league.
Playing well in the top
spotswere ChealseyGiatrelis
and Kate Donnely, who is
ranked number one on the
team.
OnTuesdaythe teamruled
the courts against Falmouth,
outscoring the Clippers 5-0.
"We've taken allseven games
5-0," said head coach Hed-
ley Smith. "The results are
coming from hard work and
practice."
Wednesday afternoon ,
beneath sunny skies, the
Raiders trumped Taunton,
maintainingtheir top-notch
status. "We haven't lost a
point yet," said Smith. "I
can't remember that hap-
pening in all my years of
coaching."
This afternoon the girls
play Martha's Vineyard be-
fore facing Dennis-Yarmouth
on Monday and taking on
Cape Cod Academy later
next month.
"That should be good,"
said Smith. "It would kind of
give us the Cape if we win."
It's next week's match
against Bridgewater-Rayn-
ham on Wednesday,however,
that hasthe team excited. "If
we beat Bridgewater-Rayn-
ham next week it puts us
in a championship position
against Marshfield ," Smith
said. "It would be great to go
undefeated at home."
Girls track bested at home

remain impressive

FANTASTIC FORM - It was discus
domination by the Doherty sisters,
Melissa (right) and Meaghen, as
the two took first and second place
respectively in the event during
Tuesday's track meet against New
Bedford and Bridgewater-Raynham.
In spite of top performances by
Jill Lyon and Melissa Doherty, the
BHS girls varsity track team lost
to Bridgewater-Raynham (88 to 43)
and New Bedford (85 to 46) Tuesday.
Lyon won the javelin throw with a
distance of 94 feet, 6 inches, cap-
tured first place in the mile with
5:46, and took the two-mile.
The Doherty sisters dominated in
the discus and the shot with Melissa
ranking first with throws of 106 feet
and 34 feet respectively. Meaghen
Doherty finished second in both
events.
The next meet for the team will
be tomorrow with the state relays
in Peabody, followed by a meet with
Marshfield on Tuesday.

Tuesday. Although the team lost
4-3, the BHS defense was the
strongest it has been all season.
After a tnumphant
start, the BHS girls var-
sity lacrosse team simply
couldn't find the net, losing
to Martha's Vineyard 4-3 at
Tuesday's home game.
Although Barnstable was
ahead 3-1 for the better part
of the game, MV rallied and
scored three unanswered
goals with 13 minutes on the
clock.
In spite of the upset, the
BHS girls' defense was the
best it has been all season.
Playing well and holding
their own strongly against
the Vineyard were Erika
Hansen, Christina Tyndall
and Kelcie King, who had
strong assistance from
Kathryn Christo and Jessie
Strock.
Goalie Brittany Warming-
ton had a tremendous game.
turning out 20 saves during
the match.
Scoring for Barnstable
were Andrea Camelio, Liz
Seideman and Jessie LaC-
asse.
Head coach Dave Peros
was pleased with his team's
performance in spite of their
loss. "The whole game was a
real highlight," he said. "They
left-nothing on the field.
Next week, the team
travels to Duxbury before
facing Scituate at home on
Thursday.
