Votersin the Barnstable
Fire District will meet
Monday night at
the Barnstable-West
Barnstable Elementary
School to act on $3.6 mil-
lion in requests during for
the 2006 annual meeting
and another $552,000 in a
four-article special meet-
ing.
Fire Chief Robert Cros-
by said that the only new
item within his depart-
ment's$1.55 million oper-
ational budget is a $26,000
request for dispatching.
Up until this year, the
department' s emergency
dispatching was handled
by the Barnstable County
Sheriff's Department at
no charge. Crosby said
that the original $36,000
request was negotiated
down by $10,000.
The department is also
looking for authorization
to dispose of its 1998 am-
bulance. Last year, voters
backed the purchase of
a new ambulance , but
it was decided not to
dispose of the existing
ambulance until it was
determined that growth
in calls for service would
not necessitate a second
ambulance.
Crosby said that the
Village Green affordable
housing development
in Independence Park
loomed as a potential
source of new and in-
creased demands , but
that has not broken
ground as yet. He said
that the demand is not
sufficient at this time
to make the investment
in licensing, equipping
and maintaining a second
ambulance.
Other capital items
sought by the department
include a new outboard
for its 17-foot Whaler
($5,000), two new defi-
brillators ($6,400), and
$12,000 to power wash
and perhaps paint the
fire station's shingles.
A replacement pick-up
truck is also being sought
($30,000).
The district's pruden-
tial committee is looking
for a $138,150 operating
budget , and will control
another $698,972 for the
operation of the district.
The water department
is seeking a budget of
$484,562.
In the four-article spe-
cial meeting, which begins
at 7:45 p.m., the water
department is requesting
$325,000 for the installa-
tion of water mains and
hydrants in the district.
Another$200,000is sought
for a Supervisory Control
and Data Acquisition Sys-
tem for the district'swater
distribution system.
A program of auto-
mating the water de-
partment' s distribution
system ($30,000) is also
sought, asis adistribution
system hydraulic model
($25,000).
Annual Elections
The annual election of
officers is scheduled for
Saturday morning, with
voting open from 9 a.m. to
noon at the fire station.
Allincumbents are run-
ning unopposed. Seek-
ing additional three-year
terms are Charles Fuller,
prudential committee ,
and Evelyn Bassett , board
of water commissioners.
District clerk Charles Ea-
ger is seeking another
one-year term , as is mod-
erator Richard Clark.

COMM meets May 16
on $13M warrant
The Centerville-Osterville-
Marstons Mills Fire District will
meet Tuesday, May 16, to act on
just over $13 million in requests to
fund the district's 2007 operation
and capital budget.
Article 14 asks voters to "waive
and release any restriction " on
the town-owned Darby property
off Old Mill Road for which the
district just gained a water ease-
ment. This language follows the
easement language approved by
the town council, which differs
from what COMM voters ap-
proved last year. The district
sought to permanently restrict all
of the remaining land outside the
easement area from any future
development.
Among the financial items of
interest are $5.65 million for fire
department operations , $1.56 mil-
lion for water department opera-
tions , $2.67 million for prudential
committee operations , $132,337 to
settle the 2005 firefighters con-
tract , $340,700 to settle the 2006
contract for the fire department ,
$50,000 to provide engineering
and architectural services for the
renovation of Osterville 's Sta-
tion #2 , $300,000 to replace the
mechanical equipment at Center-
ville's Station #1, and $450,000 to
replace undersized water mains in
the district.
The meeting will be held at the
Marstons Mills East Horace Mann
Charter Public School Auditorium
beginning at 7 p.m. The annual
elections are scheduled for Mon-
day, May 15, at the Centerville
Fire Station. One three-year term
is available on the prudential
committee , board of fire commis-
sioners and board of water com-
missioners. A one-year term for
moderator is also on the ballot.
Voting takes place at the station
from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
