BEARING THE TORCH - Maryellen Loucks of West Barnstable leads
students from Centerville Elementary School, where she is the nurse,
on a celebratory lap around the ball field during a school rally held last
Friday in honor of her running the Boston Marathon on Monday.
While all eyes were on the
Kenyans in Boston Monday,
for runners Alicia Furrer and
MaryellenLouckscrossingthe
finish line was still incredibly
sweet.
Furrer, of Cotuit , and
Loucks, of West Barnstable,
weren't simply in the Boston
Marathon to run. Both wom-
en, participating separately,
ran to raise money for two
important national health
organizations.
Citing her sister as her rea-
son for tackling Heartbreak
Hill, Furrer donned her run-
ning shoes for the American
Liver Foundation , raising
nearly$5,000."Whenyou start
fundraising,you gettheletters
with the checks and realize
how manypeople are affected
by liver disease," she said.
On Saturday evening prior
to the race, Furrer attended
an ALF dinner with other
runners, as well as those af-
fected byliver disease,includ-
ing donors and recipients of
fiver transplants. "It was a
very emotional evening,"said
Furrer.
Now home and back at
work as a bank executive,
Furrer continues to reflect
on her experience onthe trail
from Hopkinton to Boston.
"It was wonderful,"she said.
"It's really amazing how the
city really embraces the
race."
A particularly fond memory
forFurrer
, whofinished in5:44,
is having her name called out
by cheering fans as she ran
past.
For Maryellen Loucks, the
race was especially poignant.
This is the first marathon
she has run since her diag-
nosis last May of multiple
sclerosis.
To heighten awareness of
the illness, Loucks decided
to raise funds for the National
MS Society.Prior to the race,
she had raised more than
$9,000 for the organization.
She had no idea that dona-
tions werestill cominginwhile
she was already in Boston.
"When I got home on Mon-
day, there was a check in my
mailbox from a complete
stranger for $1,000," said
Loucks. "I am very thank-
ful."
Last Friday, before Loucks
set off for the big city, the
students of Centerville El-
ementary School where she's
the nurse held an all-school
rally. Loucks led the children
inacelebratory lap aroundthe
ball field across the street.
Knowing that she had so
much support from strang-
ers and family alike was what
kept Loucksmotivated during
her four-and-a-half hour run.
"It carried me through," she
said.

INTO THE WIND - Barnstable High School's varsity sailing team had an up and down afternoon against
Boston College High and St. George's Wednesday. BHS defeated BCH 3-2 but fell to St. George's 3-0.
The BHS varsity sailing
team earned themselves a
victory and a loss Wednes-
day during some testy
weather and a small craft
advisory.
Shortly after the rain
began Wednesday afternoon
the team took to the water
against Boston College High
School in a close but suc-
cessful match, emerging
victorious at 3-2. Although
they fell to St. George's later
in the day 3-0, the team
sailed well, according to
head coach Andrew Nugnes.
"They know how to sail," he
said.
Senior skipper Leis
Walcutt turned in an excel-
lent performance with crew
Chelsea Scudder, also a se-
nior. "Leis did unbelievable ,"
said Nugnes. "They actually
voted him captain, which
will be announced when the
kids come back from vaca-
tion. He was on fire."
Scudder has been sailing
at varsity level since she was
a sophomore. "Experience
on the water is the name of
the game," said Nugnes.
The coach was also
impressed with the perfor-
mances of skipper Brendan
Boudreau and crew Nicci
Laliberte, both seniors.
"They did great," he said.
"They are the voice on the
water. They tell everyone
what they should be doing
and really keep everything
running smoothly."
The team of junior skip-
per Nat Shabatt and senior
crew Lauren Hill remained
consistent throughout the
day in spite of pelting rains
and choppy surf. "They are
the milestone of the team,"
said Nugnes. "They lead by
example and really showed
that."
The team is 8-5 overall
and 3-2 in the Cape and Is-
lands League. On Saturday.
Members travel to Portland
for the New England Fleet
Racing Qualifiers. Racers
who qualify will compete on
Sunday in the championship
in Lakeville, Conn.

Althoughthe spring sports

most recent victories over
Falmouth and Dartmouth.
On Monday the boys faced
Falmouth, locking into an

by asolid home run byjunior

motivation the team needed

Pitching well was Adam
White who only gave up six
hits to the Clippers, includ-
