Balancing nature with your chi and ha "C By Nicholas Smith news@barnstablepatnot.com eng-Shui? That's some kind of martial arts, right?" This is what Marstons Mills resident and professional cook , Craig Leblanc, said when asked if he practiced Feng-Shui. Leblanc 's response is typ ical of the kind of rumors that are circulating about the 3.000 year-old Chinese disci pline. Feng-Shui (pronounced "fung schwee," literall y meaning "wind-water ") is one of those practices that is often miscon- strued because of its association with the mystical. According to the American Feng Shui Institute , a school that teaches classes on the ancient Chinese art. Feng-Shui is based on scientifi c princi ples and is not related to any religion or belief system. It is a scientifi c disci pline based on the anal ysis of energy. Essentiall y. Feng-Shui is concerned with our relationshi ps with nature and our environment , so we can live in harmony with our surroundings. Feng- Shui dictates that we should live with the powers of nature as opposed to against them. At its bare bones , Feng-Shui assigns energy, like "chi ," the harmonious en- ergy, and "ha " the hard energy, to all the things that surround us in our lives. For instance the placement of the television set or where the door is positioned in a particular room of the house. The core princi ple of Feng-Shui is to arrange all the things in our Iives-from material possessions to the colors of the walls - in a positive , enlivening and insp ir- ing manner. There are, of course , vary ing degrees of dedication and devotion to the Feng- Shui philosoph y. Some Feng-Shui mas- ters claim to have visions that describe to them the energ ies of all things - a cactus plant , for example , in the corner of the room mi ght radiate a violent , black energy and therefore should be removed from the room. In fact , there are plenty of Feng-Shui masters for hire that will come to your home and evaluate the situation, di- agnose any bad energy and provide a recommended remed y.
