Kitchen fixes for

and flowers in hiber-
nation through April,
it often seems as if the Cape
misses out on much of the
spring season. Though we know
spring and summer are com-
ing, the dreary months until
they arrive can make anyone
wish for a quick dose of cheer
in the home.
Desp ite the lack of color associated
with the Cape 's earl y season , your
kitchen , the heart of the home, doesn 't
have to be bleak. Now is the perfect
time tor a few quick changes that can
transform that utilitarian space from
uninviting to irresistible.
Small changes, big results
Reworking your kitchen for spring-
time doesn 't have to break the bank.
Often , the smallest details can pop out
to achieve a new, fresh look. "Kitchens
are bi g bucks ," to remodel , said Cyn-
thia Harris , owner of the Desi gner 's
Touch in Osterville. Often , she said ,
comp letel y remodeling a kitchen can
cost upward s of $30,000, a daunting
price for a transitional fix.
In her own newl y remodeled kitchen ,
Harris uses Nantucket baskets to change
the look from season to season. Both
silk and fresh flowers (you can even
combine the two to flesh out a fresh
arrangement) placed in the baskets near
the windows bring spring 's fresh look
indoors , which is especiall y up lifting
before outdoor flowers have bloomed.
Flowers can be used all over to make
your kitchen blossom into an inviting
place.
Silk ivy or vines can be draped over
chandeliers or li ghting fixture s in the
kitchen for an elegant look. In addi-
tion , many green flowering plants thrive
indoors , especiall y during earl y spring
when there is plenty of sunli ght , said
Peters.
Baskets can also brin g organization
to refri gerators and other storage areas.
Harris uses them to hold fresh eggs ,
fruits , cheeses , and other foods in the
fri g that can clutter it after a fresh spring
cleaning.
