mon. A stone stove usuall y has a modern grill inside ,
said Fair.
"It 's very popular out west," said Ken Foster of Break-
away at Trinity Plaee in Mash pee . which offers a wide
selection of grills . "In this area it 's catching on. It 's called
a built-in. (The grill ) basicall y ju st sits in the cavity you
make for it. "
"I' m seeing a lot of hi gh-end stuff latel y. $2,000 grill
tops in masonry enclosures , countertops with cabinets ,"
Gray said.
Foster said it doesn 't stop there.
"You can accommodate just about anything the customer
wants ," he said, from refr igerators to wine coolers to
pizza ovens. "Whatever you can think of is available ."
even sinks with running water.
Then there 's the Survivor theme: fire pits.
"Never built one in my life and last year we built two,"
said Gray.
Of course , a backyard fire pit isn 't just a simp le hole in
ground. An 18-inch retaining wall -"perfect for seating, "
he said - often surrounds the actual burning enclosure ,
which can be made of matching material.
Fair said some customers want to incorporate water
- fishponds or waterfalls , for examp le.
"The sound of water is soothing , as they say." he
said.
And some peop le want recreational facilities. Gray said
he 's built three back yard bocce courts in the past two
years. "(For) families with childre n, outdoor playgrounds
are very poplar now with a patio ," he said.
Gray said natural materials are becoming relati vel y rare ,
althoug h they 're still popular in hi gh-end desi gns. Blue
bluestone is becoming scarce , he said , and can exceed $30
per square foot installed , y ielding a $7,000 price tag for a
200-square-foot patio -and that 'sjust the patio. Concrete
product s run $9 to $15 pe r square foot , he said.
Fair said costs vary widel y, and are driven by what the
customer wants. Some still prefer a more
traditional patio. "It 's all personal tastes
and prefe rences ." he said. "We try to
do or give what they ask for."
