By David Curran news@barnstablepatriot.com "Using solid neutral fabrics on the body of the sofa is very big today. " - Dan Kell y, Artifacts, Hyannis. ow formal is your liv- ing room? If your answer is "very," or even "quite/' it mig ht be time for a change. Casual is in. "Formal living rooms are sort of a thing ofthe past, with formalit y equal- ing stuffiness," said Dan Kell y, general manager of Art i facts on Main Street in Hyannis. "Comfort is now as important (in the living room) as it is for a fam- il y room. " Art i facts is full of chairs and couches from more than 30 manufacturers that balance class and comfort, and every piece can be made in dozens of fabrics - you can even brin g in your own. But if you need it ri ght away, that 's OK. too. Artifacts sells off the floor, thoug h the majorit) of the business is special order. Kell y said. "We try to show a little bit from ev- ery bod y on the floor," Kelly said. "We definitel y mix a lot. We show eclecti- cally. We don 't reall y show matching groups together. We mix manufacturers together to create an Artifacts stor ." The approach is a little different over at La-Z-Boy on Airport Road in Hyannis . thoug h the store is no less loaded with read y-to-buy furniture and swatches for ordering if they don 't have the pieces you want,in the fabric you want,at the on-site warehouse. Walk in the front door, and off to the left you 'll see what owner Jay Cabana called the "motion " furniture - pieces that recline - while the ones that don 't are to the ri ght. The motion p ieces are more "casual. " he said, while the "non- motion " furniture is more "elegant. " To the untrained eve. the differences . m terms of lines and desi gns, are far from ob ions . "La-Z-Boy, we ' re not the clunk ) recliner store anymore ," said Cabana. "We 're the stvlish living room famil y room store ." Thoug h verv different in man) ways. Artifacts and La-Z-Bo) see a lot of the same trends in popular colors and fabrics. Kelt ) and Cabana both reported that micro-fibers are bi g. So are solid colors, more li ght than dark, often set off with contrasting pi ping, fringes or pillows. Mini-prints are also popular. "Using solid neutral fabric s on the bod > of the sofa is verv bi g today," said Kell y, "and it 's easv to change pill ow fabrics for an up dated look. " La-Z-Box can show you an) piece in an) fabric on a computer in fact . you can do it on your home computer, continued on pa ge 18 Furniture selections move to the comfort zone
