Talk with many folks
about what it is that
"¦ drew them to the Cape

Band they willtell you it is
the water. There is just some-
thing magical about long
expanses of soft sand being buf-
feted by frothy waves and calm
harbors glistening in the sun.
Unfortunatel y, even it you 're luck }
enoug h to live on Cape Cod. waterfront
property isn 't always an option , beg-
ging the question of how to capture that
feeling when you live a good distance
from shore.
Water gardens are becoming an in-
creasing ly popular option tor creating
a relaxing back yard environment that
combines a number of natural elements
for a trul y uni que landscape.
Whether you 're looking for a small
pond , large pool or a simp le waterfall ,
there are numerous options to choose
from. It should be noted, however , that
creating a water garden is no small feat ,
nor is it inexpensive. But the results can
be well worth the cost and efforts.
Kelley Horton at Country Garden in
Hyannis recommended lay ing out a
rope border where you want your wa-
ter garden to go and leaving it in place
while you think.
"Consider it for at least a week. "' she
said. The waiting period will allo w for
ideas in regards to desi gn, plantings
and location.
If you are certain a water garden is
what your landscape needs , the next
step is to determine the layout of your
land. If the ground is level where you
want your garden to go. that is a plus.
Otherwise it ma) be best to call in
landscapers with experience in the in-
stallation of water gardens. Building a
water garden requires much thoug ht and
planning as there are man) elements to
consider, and a good deal of equi pment
to purchase.

kind in the garden '.' How about fish?
What is the light like in the section of
yard w here the garden is going '.' How w ill
the garden be eared for in your absence
and during the changing seasons .'
Obviously, all water gardens beg in
with a hole in which the w ater will go .

is that in many eases you can choose
