FILLER UP -The fueling
pump at a hydrogen filling
station at Toyota's corporate
headquarters in Torrance,
California.
While oil has been the most
logical choice for powering the
vehicles of the world for more
than acentury, there'sno ques-
tion that a shift to another fuel
source must occur, and soon.
The practical reason is that
the oil supply is dwindling and
but there'salso the overarching
issues of how greenhouse gases
affect the environment.
Most agree that the logical
road to repowering the world's
vehicles will eventually lead to
fuel cells, not internal combus-
tion engines. But getting fuel
cellvehicles to the point of mass
production is no easy task. The
issues the industry faces are
complex in terms of technol-
ogy, fuel infrastructure , safety
and cost.
How Fuel Cells Work
A fuel cellvehicle isessentially
a hybrid vehicle that operates
in a way similar to today's hy-
brids, such as the Toyota Prius
or Honda Accord Hybrid. It is
powered by an electric motor,
which gets its electricity from
a fuel cell stack, instead of an
internal combustion engine, as
intoday'shybrids. Where
the internal combustion
that deliver hy- \/
drogen for industrial use and
many gas stations are already
set-up to dispense compressed
natural gas using a system that
could be easily modified to dis-
pense pressurized hydrogen.
Plans are also in the works to
build a network of hydrogen
fueling stations in California,
Florida and the Northeast.
Next Steps
Real-worldresearch thusfaris
helping the development offuel
cell vehicles, but just the same,
it willbe quite awhilebefore we
find fuel cell cars at our local
dealership.Whenwedo,theywill
likelybesoldalongsidegasoline-
powered cars and hybrids - at
least initially.
Oiland gasarelikelyto remain
the dominant energy sources
until somewhere around 2040,
according to astudy conducted
by RoyalDutch/Shell, although
the study did indicate that fuel
cell vehicles could account for
25 percent of new auto sales in
industrialized nations as early
as 2020.
The years between now and
the time fuel cellvehicles arrive
in showrooms will be a time
of education, both within the
industry aswellaswiththe con-
sumers. Each alternative-fuel
vehicle, whether it be a hybrid,
a compressed natural gas car,
onethat runson ethanolor some
other fuel source, is helping to
bridge the gap between today's
internal combustion cars and
the cars of tomorrow.
