April Madness at Writers'
Center
Forget March Madness. April is
shaping up as a whirlwind for the
Cape Cod Writers' Center as it cel-
ebrates National Poetry Month.
Poets in the series include Lamont
Steptoe (April 25) and the country's
poet laureate, Ted Kooser (May 2).
Readings are from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
Cotuit Center for the Arts on Route 28.
Admission is $10.
And for you youngsters in the audi-
ence (as Ed Sullivan used to say), April
21 is the deadline for applications for
the Center's Young Writers' Workshop,
to be held Aug 21 to 25. The age
range is 12 to 16.

Osterville Library Book Sale
The Friends of the Osterville Village
Library hosts weekly book sales in the
library's basement. A sale is held April

The Marstons Mills Public Library

ed. Grades 4 through 7 are invited to
play board games from 4 to 6 p.m.

Eastham Public Library
The Eastham Public Library has
weekly storytime every Friday at 10:30
a.m. for children up to age 5. A craft
session follows. The library also hosts
a monthly "Magic The Gathering"
trading card game program for ages
11 and up the first Tuesday of each
month from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. All are
free, but you must sign up in advance.

Barnstable
Arts Foundation of Cape Cod
Submissions are being accepted
for the third annual Comcast Cape-
wide Student T-Shirt Art Contest. The
winning design will be featured on
the 21st Annual TD Banknorth Pops
by the Sea concert T-shirt. Scholar-
ships for fisrt, second and third place
will be awarded. Submission deadline
is May 10 with winners announced

Cape Cod Art Association
The Cape Cod Art Association, 3480
Route 6A in Barnstable, is offering
courses in watercolor painting, oil
painting, life drawing, digital photog-
raphy and more. The Association is
accepting student members ages 14
to 22 with a membership fee of $15
a year, which includes discounts on
classes, newsletter subscription and
ability to exhibit and sell work. An open
juried exhibition is up April 20 through
May 15. A reception and awards party
to meet the artists is held April 23 from

Cape Cod Art Association's
Children's Art Classes include Art

afternoons; and Saturday Art Discov-

What's up at the Cahoon?
The Cahoon Museum of American
Art, 4676 Route 28 in Cotuit, offers
docent tours every Friday at 11 a.m.
Classes include Sailor's Valentine,
folk painting, watercolor, bird carving,
and more. An display of fiber art that
focuses on faces and figures is on ex-

Cotuit Center for the Arts
The Cotuit Center for the Arts, 4404
Route 28, has classes for adults and
children in painting, life drawing, mixed
media, assemblage, hatha yoga and
more. An opening reception for the art-
ists in the show, "Mindflow, Subcon-
scious Art of the Soul," is held April
22 from 5 to 8 a.m.; the works are on
display through May 20. Adventures
in Art Week is held April 17 to 21 from

New visions in Truro
A new community art organization,
The Truro Group, features an exhibit of
works by 25 local artists through April
at the Truro Public Library off Route 6.
Mayflower hosts art show
Mayflower Place Retirement Com-
munity exhibits works by Anna
Lowther and Kenneth Brynildsen of
Angelheart Gallery through April 27 on
Buck Island Road in West Yarmouth.
Open studios and more in
Mashpee
Thursday and Friday mornings from
10 a.m. to noon, through spring, the
Art For Giving gallery, 27 Fountain St.
in Mashpee Commons, will hold open
studio time after which there will be a
gentle critique. Use your own materials
or the studio equipment. Admission
is $12 to $18 and pre-registration is
required by calling 508-477-2121. Ten
percent of the proceeds go to charity.
Art for Young People, ages 12 to 18,
is held Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
The fee is $12, and pre-registration is
required.
Creative Arts Center
The Creative Arts Center, Crowell
Road in Chatham, hosts an exhibition
of figure and portraits through April 28.

New exhibits and more at
CCMA
As part of the 25 exhibits planned for
its 25th year, the Cape Cod Museum
of Art is showing works by Joseph E.
Enneking (1881-1942), a well-known
regional impressionist landscape painter,
represented in major museums. Also on
display is work by John Joseph Ennek-
ing. The exhibit runs through May 21.
An exhibit of enamel work is on display
through April 20. Curator Lois Grebe
leads a six-week workshop on enamel-
ing starting May 4. Cynthia Packard
exhibits 10 new large works, 12 ft. by
12 ft., through May 7. Fielding Brown
exhibits mathematical-related wooden
and multi-media art through May 7. Take
a trip to Winterthur, Country Estate and
Longwood Gardens in Maryland and
Delaware June 8 through 10. Register by
May 15. Declan Halpin exhibits sculptur-
al paintings through April 30. The Silver
Anniversary of the museum is celebrated
April 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m when
there will be a wine tasting and a selec-
tion of foods from 13 area restaurants
available for sampling. Admission is $50.
Chal Hemmenway discusses his sculp-
ture April 20 at 7 p.m.
Children's spring art classes include
texture, music , art, folk tales, puppets,
masks , personal portraits and more,
beginning April 28. Adult studio classes
offered are still life oil painting, stained
glass, bas-relief sculpture, digital pho-
tography, contemporary film , more. Call

A trip to Rhode Island to visit the
Museum of American Illustration and
The Breakers mansion, with lunch at The
Clarke Cooke House, is scheduled for
May 11 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. $120 for
members, $135 for non-members. Regis-
tration deadline is April 28. The museum
