QUEEN OF THE Cafe - Jessica Donaldson owns and operates Cafe
de la Terre in Mashpee Commons with her husband, Mike. Their new
venue features tasty baked goods, hearty lunches, elegant dinners,
sumptuous wines, and, oh yeah, a juice bar.
There are those who
eat to live and there
are others who live
to eat. Then there are
those who simply appreci-
ate a good meal enjoyed
in a pleasant atmosphere
enhanced by wonderful mu-
sic. Those are the folks who
can be found at Cafe de la
Terre on Market Street in
Mashpee Commons.
Once upon a time, the
cafe existed at the corner of
an alley a few doors down.
Known as the "Fountain of
Juice," it was a place where
patrons could pick up a
hearty sandwich on tasty
breads and wash it down
with ajuicy smoothie.
Owners Jessica and Mike
Donaldson wanted more.
They wanted to expand
their horizons and go be-
yond juice into the world of
elegant dinners paired with
sumptuous wines enjoyed
with the accompaniment of
live music. "We tossed this
idea around and we liked
it," said Jessica from be-
hind the gleaming counter
of the cafe.
In January, Cafe de la
Terre opened overlooking
the courtyard at the corner
of their location on Market
Street.
Originally the shop
served breakfast, lunch and
dinner but found the all
day and into the night ac-
tivity somewhat daunting.
As spring unfurls
throughout Mashpee
Commons, the cafe has
comfortably settled into
its new routine of serving
baked goods, lunches, and
gourmet dinners prepared
by well-known local chef
Ralph Binder. "I like every-
thing about it," said Jes-
sica. "It's so different from
the juice bar."
Binder brings with him a
wealth of culinary experi-
ence having been at the
Millway for 15years. Natu-
rally, Binder's specialties
center around seafood and
include such delicacies as
homemade crabcakes with
petal sauce, a sumptuous
horseradish-cocktail sauce
creation, and wild poached
salmon with saffron hol-
landaise sauce. "Everybody
can cook fish," said Jessica.
"But it takes a lot to mas-
ter fish."
Adding to the delight of
Binder's meals is his Italian
background, which imparts
a lovely flair to his cooking
and can be found in such
dishes as the lobster mani-
cotti with shrimp bisque.
Each of the appetizers
and entrees at Cafe de la
Terre are paired with a
wine from the cafe's exten-
sive collection. "Right now,
we have 93 different wines,"
Jessica said. "Come sum-
mer, we hope to have many
more."
Those who enjoyed
Fountain of Juice will ap-
preciate that many of the
popular lunches can still be
found on the menu at Cafe
de la Terre including the
Caprese Sandwich of fresh
mozzarella, tomato and
basil drizzled with olive oil
on a home-baked French
baguette.
The cafe also offers its
signature hot grilled panini
sandwiches such as Jes-
sica's famous lobster roll
and the Chipotle Chicken,
which features all-natural
chicken breast, chipotle
mayonnaise, roasted red
peppers and Swiss cheese
on ciabatta.
Keeping things natural is
of the utmost importance
to the Donaldsons, who use
organic foods in their reci-
pes. "Organic foods, natu-
ral foods, hormone-free,
pesticide-free meats, cage-
free eggs," said Jessica.
Fans of their smooth-
ies will be happy to note
that they can continue to
indulge in fruity goodness
as the cafe maintains a
complete juice bar.
Cafe de la Terre also
boasts a selection of sweet
treats and pastries pre-
pared on premises in one
of several kitchens. Jessica
recommends the Tropi-
cal Mousse or the Choco-
late Moons with mousse
and praline filling. The
oversized cookies bearing
sizeable chocolate chunks
looked enticing through
the glass case.
During the next few
weeks, the cafe will be bus-
ily preparing for the sum-
mer season. A fountain will
be installed outside, as will
tables that will increase
seating in the intimate
venue to 90.
Two times a week the
cafe features live jazz or
acoustic tunes that creat e
a soothing atmosphere for
diners. When the weather
warms up suitably the
music will move outdoors,
no doubt wafting pleasingly
throughout the Market
Street area.
As the wine list at Cafe
de la Terre expands , the
Donaldsons plan to expand
the knowledge and pal-
ates of their clientele as
they host tasting evenings.
The first such event will
be held May 11from 6 to
7:30 p.m. "It's not just juice
anymore," said Jessica.
"People will really be enjoy-
ing themselves when they
come here."
Cafe de la Terre is open at 25 Market
St. in Mashpee Commons. For hours
