Newsfrom CotuitLibrary
Library is
village's window
on the world
By Barbara A. Burrow,
Director
www.library.cotuit.ma.us
Did you know there is
somethingfor everyone at the
Cotuit Library? Besides the
standard books,periodicals,
and newspapers , we offer
CDs, Books on Tape, DVDs
and videocassettes,toys and
games, puzzles, large-print
books, and book and tape
kits. You can also enjoy five
high-speed terminalsthrough
whichyou may connect to the
Internet. Wireless access is
also available throughout
the building.
Did you know we are part
of the Cape Libraries Au-
tomated Materials Sharing
or CLAMS network? Your
CLAMS card is good at most
every library on the Cape and
Islands. If you need a book
or material that we don't
own, we can retrieve it from
another library and askthat it
be sent to usfor pickup. In ad-
dition we can send for items
outside of our network using
j the Virtual Catalog. After we
assign a PIN number to you,
you may also request items
onyour own usingyour home
computer. Wewill then notify
1 you when the item arrives.
Did you know our adult
reading room doubles as a
meeting room? Many com-
munity groups use it for their
•^monthly meetings. Included
rin this is an Adult Book Dis-
cussion Group that meets

"Selection. Many people enjoy
Ithis activity.
£ Did you know that in ad-
dition to our twice-weekly
- Story times we sponsor many
j fjther programs for chil-
' dren? Included also are a
• Summer Reading Program,
Valentine Tea, Easter Egg
Hunt , Christmas Holiday
Performer, Homework Help,
and many other special craft
and storytelling events. The
Hermine Till Parenting Col-
lection in the children'sroom
is of special interest to par-
ents and teachers alike and
is vigorously used.
Did you know about the
Friends of the Library group
who work very hard to raise
funds for our book bud-
get? They sponsor monthly
luncheons with speakers, a
Fashion Show, and the Me-
morial weekend Plant, Bake
and Treasure Sale. The date
of this year's sale is May 27
at Freedom Hall.
Did you know the library
situation in Barnstable is
unique in the State? Seven
villages, each with its own
library. We receive partial
funding in the form of agrant
from the Town of Barnstable
and the Board of Trustees
makes up the difference
through a series of fundrais-
ers. Our events for this year
include our Book Saleon July
8, our annual House Tour on
July 27 -six houses in Cotuit
will be graciously opened for
viewing from noon to 4 p.m.
and a tea will be held at the
Library from 1to 4 p.m. -and
our annual Golf Tournament
at the Pocasset Golf Club
on Monday, Oct/ 2. For more
details about these events,
please contact the Library
at 508-428-8141.
The Cotuit Libraryhasbeen
lovingly tended and support -
ed for more than one hundred
years. As Sheila Bourbeau
wrote in an Historical Paper
many years ago: "A library is
books and somewhere to put
them and somepeople towant
them there, but even more it
is acollection of old memories
and future hopes, and this is
the true history of the Cotuit
Library the memories and
hopes of avillage that wanted
a library, and so it grew."
A century of growth for Cotuit FD
District robust despite
consolidation talk
By Paul Gauvin

UPGRADE - Cotuit paramedic and firefighter Jayne Pierce explains upgrades to life-saving equipment in the Cotuit ambulance
Two, four, six, eight, why don't we
consolidate?
For nearly acentury, that question has
been studied,vetted , debated ,disputed,
pondered and repeatedly shelved to
gather dust in the dungeons of TownHall
- only to be studied all over again.
And yet,Barnstable'sfivefire districts,
including Cotuit's, remain popular with
consumers,robust and autonomous enti-
ties with the tacit approval of amajority
of district voters, most of whom plan
on being ill or on vacation in Cancun
on the occasion of the annual district
meetings.
Amid new calls from the municipal
government to beat this old horse one
more time with another study, coupled
with alocal high-profile case of overtime
in the Cotuit Fire District, (See Op-Ed ,
page A:7), interested Cotuit residents will
gather May 31 to consider, among other
business, the annual report of the fire
department , its plans for the future, its
18percent increase in the level of activity
during the last fiscal yeai, and, as Chief
Paul Frazier puts it, the complexities
of maintaining a high level of service
with minimum staffing amid increasing
responsibilities and costs.
Chief Frazier hasbeen with the depart -
ment for 21years and,he says,he has seen
alot of change in adistrict that continues
to evolve from a volunteer operation to
the current 10 fulltime and seven part -
time firefighter/medics whose responses
to callsfor fire and medical help have risen
from 247 in 1980 to 714 in 2005.
"The '80s became more technical ,
there was more reporting required and
we needed fulltime people to assure
availability of personnel for immediate
response to emergencies ," the chief
said. "It was getting to the point that we
would call people and they ju st weren't
available."
Even today, he said, the full-time off-
duty employees aren't always available
for emergencies requiring addition help.
"Some have family or other commitments
