Girls fight off flat bats to rally for win Top Marshfield 5-4 By Kathleen Manwaring kmanwarmg@barnstablepatriot.com POWERFUL PITCH-Preparing to strike out yet another Marshfield player is BHS pitcher Tashauna Ashmeade, considered by coach Jen Police to be a great asset. RUN, ABBEY, RUN-After a solid hit,Abbey Bowes takes off for first base during the BHS varsity girls game against Marshfield. KATHLEEN MANWARING PHOTOS IT'S A HIT - Abbey Bowes connects during Wednesday's girls varsity softball game against Marshfield. After dropping two runs at the start of the game, BHS rallied back to win 5-4. The BHS girls varsity softball team came back Wednesday for a 5-4 win over Old Colony League oppo- nent Marshfield. Bringing home the win- ning run on a passed ball was Kristen Logan in the bottom of the seventh inning. During the game, Logan went 3 for 5. "She hit well, she ran well and she was aggressive on the base path, taking extra bases when we needed it" said head coach Jen Police. Also notable for the team was Kourtney McNamara, who had three hits and two RBI's. McNamara also played solid defense tending third base. "She solidifies the infield ," said Police. Pitchingfor the girls was Tashauna Ashmeade, with a strong arm and a sharp eye. "She has such a presence," said Police. "She has that in- nate ability to get her team to focus." BHS struggled at the start of the game, dropping two runs to Marshfield early on. "They're still second-guess- ing themselves," Police said of the girls' reluctance to throw the ball. Hitting was also a chal- lenge for BHS most of the game. "Their bats were flat until the sixth," said Police, noting that this year's team is somewhat green after losing 10 seniors. "They are young and inexperienced; apprehensive to swing the bat." While acknowledging that her team is still learning, Police did admit that she feels positive about their potential as the season progresses. "This is one of the better defensive teams I've ever had, particularly in the infield,"she said. "I do think they're going to come together fine." The next match scheduled for BHS, whose record is 3-2 (1-0 in the OCL), was set for yesterday against Bridgewa- ter-Raynham, a team Police said could prove to be a challenge. The next home game will be on the 26th against Taunton. Staying the course Pro's pro marks 35 years at Cummaquid By Ed Semprini sports@barrtstablepatnot.com KATHLEEN MANWARING PHOTO ON PAR - Allan Stewart, the "pro's pro," marks 35 years with the Cummaquid Golf Club. While watching the Cape change and grow through the years, golf was a constant. What more can be chronicled about Allan L. Stewart? What more can be told about a golf professional highly respected and honored by peers through- out New England and lauded by club members throughout a long and continuing career? What more can be written is: the 70-year-old native of Canada this spring is starting his 35th consecutive year as head professional-manager of the private and historic (or- ganized in 1895 and listed as "first in Barnstable County") Cummaquid Golf Club, a short distance from the shores of Cape Cod Bay. The three- plus decades are recorded among the longest consecu- tive years in Cape Cod golf history, joining those of such well-known professionals of the past as Gene Andersen of Oyster Harbors,Ted Turner of Wianno Golf Club, "Dutch" Wessner of Woods Hole Club (all deceased) and Jay Haberl of Dennis Pines and Dennis Highlands. Stewart's Cummaquidjour- ney began in 1971.after a stop in Concord, where he was assistant professional of the private Nashawtuc Club, one of the sites of the PGAs Senior tour, from 1961 through '65. He ventured closer to Cape Cod in 1965 when he accepted the head pro-manager post at White Cliffs Golf club in the Cedarvillesection of Plymouth, where he makes his home today. Six years later found the Stewart family crossing the Cape Cod Canal, heading for Cummaquid and its golf club. The arrival on the Cape came 60 years after Stewart picked up his first golf club at the age of 10 at the Aber- cromie Club in his hometown of New Glasgow, Canada. An outstanding hockey player, Stewart agreed to put asidethe skates after the Abercromie professional convinced him golf was to be his future. Stewart "journeyed" back through the years to respond to a question about his long career at Cummaquid. "Most satisfying? I have to say. to have gained the respect and to be honored through all the years by board members and membership with awiderange of personalities, and being chosen New England Profes- sional of the Year (2000); that has been most satisfying." He expressed pride in his partici- pation inyouth golf promotion, and in the formation of his club's Senior organization. Numerous honors have flowed to Stewart from peers and membership, including a news-magazine (Cape Cod Illustrated, defunct) designa- tion of hisfamilyasCape Cod's Golf Family of the Year.Today all seven children of Jean and Allan Stewart (five sons and two daughters) have contrib- uted from their early years to the collection of awards and plaquesthat linethe recreation room walls.Allseven canpoint to low handicaps. Stewart holds membership in the Cape Cod and South- eastern Massachusetts chap- ters of the PGA, as well as the national organization. Boys lax not lacking BHS boys lacrosse kicks things up a notch By Kathleen Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.com The BHS boys var- sity lacrosse team continues to plug away this season and their efforts are paying off. After several defeats the Raiders regrouped, triumphing in their latest home games. On April 7 the Raiders came up against Hanover, turning out a 10-8 win. "Al- ways great to get the first win of the season," said coach Greg Clements. Scoring for Barnstable were Tim Flynn and Justin Bearse with 3 each, and Mike Devlin and Chad Crocker with 2 each. Flynn and Devlin also had two as- sists, while Bearse had one assist. He also collected 11 loose balls and won 10 of 14 face-offs. "Justin Bearse came to play today," said Clements. Going into the fourth quarter, it looked as though Barnstable would suffer yet another defeat. The boys, however, returned to the field ready for a comeback. Seven seconds into the last quarter BHS scored off a fast break, getting every- one motivated. On a pass from Justin Bearse, Flynn managed to send in a 15- yard shot past the Hanover goalie. BHS scored again at 10:13 and 9:15 before getting the tying goal at the halfway mark of the quarter. Putting in the go-ahead goal was Mike Devlin, followed by an extra-man goal by Flynn withjust 35 seconds left on the clock, capping the first victory for Barnstable. The boys continued their solid playing on Monday when they faced Sandwich. After a physical back and forth game BHS reigned victorious with a final score of 9-6, improving their over- all standing to 2-1. After a slow first pe- riod that resulted in a 1-1 score, Barnstable came out fighting during the second quarter, sending in 4 goals in two minutes. In spite of a rally by Sandwich, the Raiders held together with Justin Bearse and Mike Devlin sending in 3 goals each, while Chad Crocker, George DeMello and Cam Lacey each scored once. Ruling the BHS goal was Brendan Bearse with 12 saves. "Brendan has worked real hard this pre- season," said Clements. "He has been working on his form as well as his much- improved clearing game." Bearse was helped greatly by a strong BHS defensive lineup including Tyler Hall, Henry Hunt and Corey Oberlander. Acknowledging the valiant efforts put forth by his team, Clements noted that winning face-offs and leading in loose ball pick- ups was crucial in the two wins. "Face offs and loose ball possessions were the keys to the victories,"he said. "Any time you can win over 75 percent of the face offs, you give yourself an excellent chance of winning games." The next home game for the Raiders will be Monday at 10:30 against Falmouth.
