First things first: Free
Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's
on Main Street, Hyannis is
April 25.... Can you blame
us? We reported last week
that gazillionaire BillKoch's
new book , Maritime Maver-
ick,willcost $1,500 per copy.
The actual number is $150.
Sorry about that.... If alittle
knowledge is a dangerous
thing, a little knowledge
that's out of date is prob-
ably even more perilous.
Last week's article on the
county's new Water Protec-
tion Collaborative included
a discussion among mem-
bers about blog reports
that the executive director
position has already been
spoken for. Although our
report cited John O'Brien,
former CEO of the Cape Cod
Chamber of Commerce, as
the anonymous person be-
ing discussed , blogs within
the last year have been
talking about Maggie Geist,
executive director of the As-
sociation to Preserve Cape
Cod, asthe likely ED.At the
meeting, O'Brien spoke for
both when he said, "There
was never any intention of
any single person getting
ajob out of this." Sorry for
the confusion , and we hope
this longwinded apology
hasn't added to it.... Did
you see the classified ad in
the daily for the estate sale
at Ruth Rusher's house on
the harbor? Too bad the
place wasn't turned into the
HyannisMuseum of History.
Here 's a sampling of the
listed contents: "...whaling
items (including blubber
scoop, baleen,whale'steeth
... artworks including Ver-
non Coleman and Wallace
Nutting ... bell collection
(school , cow, sleigh)... "
Congratulations to all the
recipients of the Cape Cod
Branch NAACP Joseph D.
DaLuz Awards, which will
be presented May 7 at 2 p.m.
at the Hyannis Heritage
House Hotel. They include
Art Kimber (Community),
Noah Bell (Business), Angie
Chilaka (Education), the
Rev. John B. Lopes (Re-
ligion), and Jessie "Little
Doe " Fermino ("Unsung
Hero"). For reservations,
call Joe DaLuz at 508-775-
5661 by April 25. Tickets
will be available at the door
also.... Heloisa Gelber Ri-
vas could give her free talk
titled "Find Home Where
You Are"in four languages,
but she'll stick to English
(at 7:30 p.m.) and her native
Portuguese (6 p.m.) April
29 at the JFK Hyannis Mu-
seum. Rivas is a member of
the Christian Science Board
of Lectureship.... The Ro-
man Catholic Diocese of Fall
River willtelecast an Easter
Mass Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
on WLNE-TV, Channel 6. At
7 p.m., the Easter Mass in
Portuguese willbe shown on
The Portuguese Channel....
Among the participants in
the Cape Cod Museum of
Natural History's reading
of John Hay's The Run April
22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is
Brewster TownAdministra-
tor Charlie Sumner. Maybe
Barnstable Town Manager
John Klimm could start a
tradition of reading from
The Makingof the President
I960.... Members of the
Armed Services will stand
at attention once again on
Memorial Day weekend to
honor those serving in Af-
ghanistan and Iraq. As they
do, organizers of Cape Cod
Cares for the Troops will
be collecting care packages
to be sent to the troops in
those countries. It all takes
place at the K-Mart Shop-
ping Plaza on Route 132 in
Hyannis from noon on May
28 through noon May 29;
more details can be found
at www.capecod4thetroops.
