POETRY. [For the Barnstahle Fatriot. l Tlie Snow Storm ot Mar ch 28, 1850 Tis earl y Sprina. The earth , grey and hare thro ' the bleak wi nter, Has spread out a carpet , softer and finer Than magic loom of Persia ever wove— It is of purest white and dotted o'er With cottages of alabaster roofs , Richl y festooned with crystal pendants— Her trees, naked and scared by winters frosts , Look, as tho' lade n with Spring's white blossoms And would yield , ambr osial fruit for harvest— Every little shrub most daintil y is dressed In the same livery. The sweet bird* fear To place their tiny feet upo n the sprig, And hush their scarce learned song, amid the scene— The forest eve rgreens bow gracefull y With lil y burd ens ; or with elastie spring Toss them upon the gliding traveller— Here and there a lake, like polished mirror Reflects its pearl y decorated banks— Does this beauteous mantle bless the Earth ? Will the green vine of Peas peep thro 'it , That man has planted , lured by Springs' Sun ? Ah no ! this fairy scene must he dissolved ; And man must dig in dust for gifts of nature ,— Charms for the eye cannot invigorate : With the "brows warm sweat , bread must be earned , And Summer showers and heat , Man 's labo r bless. A Lover of Nature A Domestic Drama, in three acts and a half, short meter. This longing after-beauty, This sighi ng after curls , This chasing after fashion , AVhercver fashion whirls , And all that sort of thing, May do for those who like them—¦ For those devoid of laste , For those who barter diamonds off For diamonds made of paste , And other blockheads. But to a wifefivho trul y loves, Who'd be \viint she appears , Who^l spread a^sunshinc round a man That keeps away her tears , And bringsTher 'tatcrs home, We 'd whisper softly in her ear, We'd grave it ortlher heart , That knowing welRo fry a steak , Beats sentiment ami art , A darned sight ! \ To Avoid Broils Learn to Fry. MORAL READINGS Seutcqce of 2>e»tta «Ks»Snst Jesus. The following is a copy of the most memorable judicial sentence which lias ewrVbecn pronounced in the annals of the world , namel y, that of death against the Saviour; with the remarks which the Journal Le Droit has collected and the knowled ge of which must be interesting in the hi ghest degree to r.vcry Christian , Unti l now , I am not aware lliat it has ever bee.n made public in the German papers. The sentence, is word for word as follows : "Sentence is pronounced by Pontius Pilate Inten- (lent of the Lower province of Gallilee .that Jesus ol Nazireth shall suffer death by the cross. "In the seventeenth year of the ,reign of the Em- peror Tiberias , and on the 25th of March , in the most hol y city of Jerusalem , during the ponlifica- tion of Annas and Cai pha. s: 'Ponlius Pilate ,Intendent of the province of Low- er Gallilce , sitting in jud gement in the presidential seat of the picetor. 'Sentences Josus of Nazareth to death on a cross between two robbers, as the numerous and notori- ous testimonies of the peop le prove : '1. Jesus is a mislentlur. '2. lie. lias excited the people to sedition. '3. He is an enemy to the laws. '4. lie falsel y calls himself the Son of God. '5. IIo falsely calls himself the King of Israel. '6. He wont into the temp le, followed by a multi- tude , carry ing palms in their hands. 'Orders the first centurion , Qtiirilliiis Cornelius ,lo bring him to the place of execution. 'Forbids .ill persons, rich or poor, to prevent the execution of Jesus. 'The witnesses who have signed the sentence of death against Jesus are '1. Daniel Robanl , Pharisee ; '2. John Zo.i obabel. '3. Capet. .'Jesus shall be taken out of Jerusalem through the gate of Iruenea. I his sentence is pngraved on a plate of brass in the Ili'brew 'liingnage. A similar plate has been sent to each tribe. It was discovered in the year 1820, in the cit y of Aqnihi , in the king dom of Na- ples, throug h a search made for Roman anti quities , und remained there until it was found by the com- missaries of the arts, in the. French army in Ital y. Up to the time of the campai gn in the south of It- al y. It was preserved in the sacristy of the Carthu- sians, near Nap les, where it was kept in a box of eb- ony. Since then , this relic has been kept in the Chapel of Caserta. The Ciuthusians obtained it by their petitions that the plate might be kept by them , which was an acknowled gement of the sacrifices which they made for the French army. The French translation was made literall y by members of the commission of arts. Dcneh had a facsimile of the plate engraved , which was bought by Lord Howard , on the sale of his cabinet , for 2890 francs. There seems to be no historical rtaubt as to the an thenticity of this. The reasons of the sentence cor respond exactl y with those of the Gospel. f^JHIore are beautif u l sentences from the pen ol Colerid ge. Nothin g can be more eloquent—noth. ing mo"re true ;— "COMFOHT OL- CniLDiiKN. —Call not that man ¦Wretched who , whatever ^else he suffers as to pain inflicted , pleasure denie/l , has a child for whom he hopes and on whom be, doats. Poverty inav grind hi m lo thi! dust , obscur i ty may east its darkest man- tle over him , the son' g of the gay may be far from his own dwelling, his face may be unknown to his neighbors , and his ?voice may be unheeded by those among whom he \hicji he would not part for wealth def ying compulation , for fame filling a world's ea r, for the luxury" of the highest health , or for the sweetest sltj ej-i th at ever sat upon a mortal's eye." 'I no two/most precious things this side the grave lire our reputation ami our Ijfe. ' But it is to be la- mented that the most contemptible whisper may de- prive us of the ,one , and the weakest weakon of the other. A wise man , therefore , will be more anx- ious to deserve a fair name than to possess it , and this will teach him so to live as not to be afraid to die, It is no merit to accomplish an object by difficult instruments , when easy ones are at hand , or to reach an end by a circuitous road, when there is a strai ght course. Michael Angelo being (old of an artist who painted with his fingers , exclaimed , ' Wh y does not tin; blockhead make iise of his penci ls ?' A man tlown E.ist was scolded hy his wife, and said that if she did not desist, ha would commit suicide,or t"iti/ himself in tka attemp t^ * Granville Seminary nnHE Spring Term of this Institution will commence _!_ on Monday, March 18.
