An art colony may spread from BeechTree Gallery Artists welcome at new shop near 230 year-old 'pillar' of community By Joe Gouveia news@bamstablepatriot.com EDWARD F MARONEY PHOTO BEECH BUDDY - Donna Jurczuk will open her BeechTree Gallery on Main Street in May. There's something about that tree, says Donna Jurczuk, owner of the new BeechTree Gallery at 599 B-3 Main St., Hyannis. "This tree," she said. "Everyone has memories here," and with her vision, Jurczuk offers more memo- ries to visitors of the BeechTree Courtyard, with the opening of her new BeechTree Gallery the begin- ning of May. The idea is to create a space and plaza unique and funky, under the shadow of the 230-year-old weeping Beech tree in the center courtyard. By the design of things so far, Jurc- zuk, 22, is off to a very good start. Her vision is of the entire Beech- Tree Courtyard. Creating a funky new art space there is part of what she calls the "BeechTree Revival." She cites several new stores open- ing up there, a friend opening a glass blowing shop next door and an ice cream shop a few doors down. She said she sees a "hip, happening new Courtyard" taking shape. She and boyfriend Rich Soares, a Yarmouthport contractor, are putting late-night hours into reno- vating the gallery space. They've installed new hardwood floors, the space is newly painted , an artificial hearth and mantle being built, and the center island is made of an an- tique door more than one hundred years old. The register desk is done with bamboo, and DSL service has music playing via the Internet. The result is a coffeehouse ambiance in a gallery space. After the hearth and mantle are complete, chairs will be added, along with art books and magazines. "I want it to become a hangout spot," said Jurczuk , who always knew she'd start a business someday. Her vision started out thinking of opening a coffeehouse , maybe even a working art studio. The new BeechTree Gallery is a combination of everything creative. With a serene feel to it, the gallery's ambiance is akin to a coffeehouse , minus the cappuccino. "It's not just for tourists," the owner said. "It's for everybody. A place where people can sit, relax, spend some time, flip through a magazine, look through some art." There will be plenty of art to look at, including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, steel sculptures, stained glass, and pottery. Also in stock will be accessories such as unique belts and buckles resembling the old-style brooches , now fashion- able among the younger crowd ("They're not just for old ladies anymore," Jurczuk informed us). Many other accessories from Steel Toe Studios are stocked also. The gallery will offer indoor/out- door Persian rugs, made of recycled plastics, ranging from bright colors to more neutral tones. "They're perfect for Cape Cod living," Jurc- zuk said, as they can be used out- doors and easily hosed off to clean. The Gallery even stocks unique glass beads from Africa, made by women of the Masai tribe. These women live in poverty, so buying their beads "goes to a good cause," said Jurczuk. "One of my professors just went to Africa," she said, "and she's a photographer as well. I just may have some of her photographs in here." Local artists such as glass blower Brooke Morrison of Hyannis and potter Brandon Fitzpatrick of Cha- tham will have their work displayed and for sale. The BeechTree Gallerywill pres- ent a featured artist per month, complete with artist receptions. Ju- rczuk will have two easels outside the front door, so art will be created under the old Beech tree. "People go to Provincetown be- cause of its funky main strip," said Soares, "We want Hyannis to be the same." The couple was inspired by all the recent improvements in the business area. Prior to that, said Soares, "Main Street seemed to be going downhill. We saw a store on Main Street displaying bedpans in their window. To us, this wasn't something to draw people here." Jurczuk and Soares hope creative spirits will make Main Street home. "I know as an artist myself, you make art, but then if you don't have anywhere to show it, you can lose your drive," said Jurczuk. So her vi- sion is also about "giving artists an opportunity to have a place to put their work." One artist who will be showing is Amy McCoy, who does photo trans- fers. She has done much work over- seas, particularly Italy, but does alot of Cape Cod scenes as well. Other art includes wall-hung water fountains and low- to middle-relief custom tiles. If you're unsure about where to put these decoratives , or how to install them, Jurczuk will offer design services as well. The time spent at art trade shows and art & craft festivals over the off-season has certainly paid off for Jurczak. She is the proud owner of the funkiest new art gallery/chill- out spot on Main Street. n l l f l i____l_ _ni_____:i n G S_ii _3_____]___i IV E_BWi_^_gttiaBa11' —___¦_¦_111— Know the Market.
