LETTERS CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:7 The Cape and Massachusetts is a town-based government. In fact less than half of the original County Governments still exist in the Commonwealth. The County certainly may have a role in advising our towns on growth, but the regulatory power must be returned to the citizens and their elected officials., What do 50 county-appointed employees know about what our town needs for our citizens and tax base? The time has come to restructure the Cape Cod Commission as an advisory agency or withdraw and determine our own future. Larry Wheatley Cotuit WB's water really is public In the March 24 Patriot. Henry Farnham asked, "Why doesn't West Barnstable have any public drinking water supply?" Water from home faucets is public water. Water from homes both here and elsewhere is taken from the same aquifer that extends below all villages. According to Woods Hole geologist Robert N. Oldale, this huge freshwater bubble is 150 feet in depth and suspended in salt-laced seawater extending down- ward another 150 feet to solid rock. It is so necessary to keep this huge, fresh water bubble of rainwater salt-free and potable. At low tide, this fresh water can often be seen leaking out from a beach edge. All villages including West Barnstable have the same basic water source. Most villages use a few husky pumps to supply the waterto theirresidents , and charge for it. West Barnstable , according to the 2000 census, has 1,083 housing units, and therefore 1,083 active pumps pumping water free of charge. To sum up, West Barnstable 'swater situation is good. Other villages are doing well with the same water sources. West Barnstable, however, provides its residents the privilege of pumping their own water, free of charge. Robert B. Wood West Barnstable A rebuilding hand... MASKED MAN HELPSOUT-Steve Dager of Centerville donned a filter mask to keep the dust and mold away while he andthreecolleagues gutted hurricane-damaged homes in New Orleans. CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:1 hurricane, buildings that were checked were spray-painted with relevant information , such as the search group's number and whether there were any bodies inside. "When the zeros become ones," the destruction that faded into normalitysnapped them back into the reality of the situation. ""It's there right in your face," Cobb said. In a tour of the parts of the city, their hosts wanted them to see that it wasn't poor areas or rich areas that were affected. It was everywhere. "They basically gave us the insider lowdown of what you're seeing in the news," Cobb said. "We did a house in a very, very poor neighborhood... and one affluent neighborhood. " Dager said. One of the more affluent homes belonged to former members of the Oakland Raid- ers and Miami Dolphins. Cobb's business is selling homes for Sotheby 's Interna- tional Real Estate, but he said there was alittle construction in his background, He worked for acompany in college doing similar clean-up work, "but it wasn't like this ... this was grinding." There was a method , if not science, to the clean-up. First came the haul-out of the homes, removal of carpeting, stripping the interior down to studs, an airing out, an application of fungicide and another airing out. "We didn't even get to the wiring," Cobb said. Everything was hauled to the sidewalk, where FEMA- hired contractors would col- lect it, first for appliances , then computer equipment and TVs, then everything else. It's a process this crew of four repeated three times in their four days down south. It was pretty much solid work, with breaks for food and sleep. Running out for a quick bite proved to be anything but quick. Fast food establish- ments have yet to return in many areas , so even finding a location was difficult. The church members also provided food , including some what Dager called some "seri- ous Louisiana cooking." "We ate well, but didn't gain a pound ," Cobb said. The connecting flight for their trip home brought them through Washington, D.C.,and in connection with "heavies from FEMA." Cobb was told that the those in the recovery effort have "stopped talking about billions to clean up this storm ... they're now talking about trillions. " New Orleans made it back into the regular news cycle while the church group was there, because Mardi Gras was about to begin, but it has fallen away again. "It' s too bad." said Dager, "because folks down there are really hurting. " Another trip may be or- ganized through the church sometime this summer. Chamber notes... CONTINUED FROM PAGE A:8 not spend the winter hibernating. Barnstable town councilors , admin- istrators and community leaders have been work- ing to bring forward criti- cal projects such as the 132 Corridor, which will improve flow at that criti- cal gateway (not without some growing pains) and improve both commerce and the freer flow of resi- dents and visitors. The Chamber continues to work hard to steward the Exit 6 1/2 project while also continuing to sup- port some of the major lo- cal initiatives such as the Cape Cod Trolley and the continuing revitalization of Main Street. Thanks in large measure to the tireless oversight by the BID, the revitalization of Hyannis' Main Street has brought to life a dy- namic, prosperous village that sets the tone for our entire area. Hyannis is undeniably the hub of Cape Cod and the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to supporting and growing a robust , re- sponsible business com- munity. Best of all, it's only spring and summer is just around the corner. i ¥*' fAPsK JUL' " i s l' ' j&H' ' &k ¥^ ^^ Ctt£& 4& 4w ^fef fe ask jvy ji'y jvy >^ ^f*V" Friday Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Few Showers Few Showers Mostly Sunny Mostly Sunny Mostly Sunny Partly Cloudy Partly Cloudy 51/36 45/35 49/35 52/38 54/41 55/40 51/38 Day Mi Lo Pracip* i «y Today we will see partly cloudy skies with a 50% chance of Tuesday 47 26 O.OO" S Jk sn0W8rs ' ni9n temperature of 51°, humidity of 87% and an Wnere dld me terw "hurricane " Wednesday 52 25 O.OO" O ^ overnight low of 36°.
