One will be a four-door car with coupe-like styl- ing that will be priced between the Passat and the Phaeton. The second car will be a roadster that will be based on the Concept R car that was shown at the Frankfurt auto show a couple of years ago. The roadster will be a mid-engined vehicle and have rear-wheel drive. The two vehicles are part of Volkswagen'splan for 20 new vehicles over the next 10 years. The group recently petitioned the Federal Trade Commission asking for it to intervene and require auto- makers to release the com- puter codeswithinthekeysto locksmiths and aftermarket companies so keys could be made by third parties , instead of just automakers. The group charges that the refusal to provide the infor- mation drives up the costs of the keys, which often cost around $150 to replace and can occasionally cost in the thousands. While some au- tomakers provide computer data from its so-called smart keys to locksmiths, many do not. The Alliance of Automo- bile Manufacturers , which represents nine automakers that sellmorethan 80percent, ofthe newvehiclesinthe U.S.," says that it needs a method; of offering the codes to third: parties without increasing:, the risk of theft. Smart keys. are considered to be an effec-. tive way to deter auto theft." M MM MS*- M*W MS* "SK8 SWi* ttMJ <**& MM flfr ? Mbl^Fj M ^MMHFJ^.M M-— 1 508-775-3049 • 1-800-439-3049 www.tracyvw.com
