Cotuit woman running marathon for liver research By Kathleen Manwaring kmanwaring@barnstablepatriot.com KATHLEEN MANWARING PHOTO RACING FOR RESEARCH - Alicia Crowell-Furrer of Cotuit will be taking part in the 110th Boston marathon April 17 to raise money for the American Liver Foundation on the Run for Research team. By day, Alicia Crow- ell-Furrer is a mild- mannered bank executive. Early mornings, evenings and weekends, however, she can be found pounding the pavement in Cotuit as she trains dili- gently for this year's Boston Marathon. While physical fitness is important to Furrer, her de- cision to run the marathon had more to do with the fit- ness of others who will ben- efit from the funds she will raise for the American Liver Foundation (ALF) through the Run for Research team. Motivated by her sister, Jeanne Willis of North Attle- boro, who ran the marathon for ALF in 2001, Furrer began her foray into the competitive running world when the two ran the Bos- ton Athletic Association's half marathon this year. "Ba- sically it's her fault," said Furrer of Jeanne. Acknowledging that she wanted to run a full mara- thon before her fortieth birthday in October, Furrer was inspired by Jeanne's experience with Run for Re- search and decided to sign on as one of 240 running to raise funds for ALF."It's a great cause," she said. "It's a little different. "There are so many orga- nizations that raise money," said Furrer. "There are a lot of things that happen with the liv- er. There is so much out there that you don't hear about." ATTHE READY-Members of the boysvarsity and junior varsity baseballteams prepare Wednesday for their games against Sandwich on Monday. The spring sports season at Barnstable High School began last weekend with several scrimmages as teams prepare for their busy schedules. The boys varsity lacrosse team played a round-robin series against Braintree, Nauset and The Hyde School of Bath, Maine. Given that it was a scrimmage series, scoring wasn't the prima- ry focus of the day. "As a coach, I use these scrimmages to find out about my players," said head lacrosse coach Greg Clements. This year's boys varsity team has 13 returning players and 13 new players. "We have a nice core of seniors," said Clements. "This is probably the most expe- rienced group in my five years as coach." The girls lacrosse team also held a scrimmage last week- end, playing against Walpole, Nantucket and Falmouth. "We matched up quite well for a young team," said head coach David Peros. "They played well." With a clutch of new players on the team, this will be a sea- son of evolution. "For us this is kind of a developing year," Peros said, adding that he is quite - pleased with the level of play he has seen. "It's a learning experi- ence for all of us so far," he said. The boys varsity volleyball team, under the tutelage of Tom Turco, had a match against Weymouth that went well for the new team. "Senior Bruno Cunha is our setter. He has good leader- ship skills and is a threat at the service line," said Turco. "Mid- dle blocker Kyle Bates blocked very effectively and is starting to attack the ball better and senior Alex Pober had a good day at the net." Turco notes that an adjust- ment was made midway through play that put Mike Deluga, a senior on the team, in the middle hitter spot. "This gave us more size in that position and he played well," Turco said. "Overall, this was a great oppor- tunity for the boys to see what established teams look like. This is a very competitive and hard- working group of athletes who are improving every day." The official season kicks off Monday with events scheduled in tennis, volleyball, and base- ball.
