Downes said. "I do not want to get
back into DJs and loud music.Iwant
to kick back."
Ifthat sounds like the Parrothead
philosophy, it is. The Downeses
said they'd like to have a simple
restaurant with the kind of atmo-
sphere that Jimmy Buffett fans
would enjoy.
"We're not having afull bar,"John
said. "We're not doing shooters,
shots and that type of stuff."
There willbe music,too, with one
or two entertainers and all of it sup-
posed to be kept withinthe confines
of the building. There'll be 40 to 44
seats inside and 24 patio seats. The
brothers hope to open on Memorial
Day weekend.
Although the Downeses dis-
agreed, Carey said their menu has
"a lot of Mexican food, which af-
fects us greatly." She criticized the
brothers ' plans for music, noting
that Gringo's "has always strived
not to be a night club."
Carey said she was concerned
about "turning allthese storefronts
into restaurants"when the buildings
are too small and too ill-equipped
to support such businesses.
Robert Sullivanof Cotuit,who has
worked with the Careys at Gringo's
for a quarter-century, said a public
need for SmilingJack'shad not been
established.
"Wedon't need anotherrestaurant
with a full liquor license," he said.
"(That location) has always been a
retail store."
"In no way is it a nightclub,"
Sean Downes said. "It will be more
of a family-type atmosphere. We're
not looking to get young people in
there. It's a casual place to go for a
good time."
There is a public need for his
restaurant , John Downes declared.
"Everyone seems to close up right
after summertime," he said. "They
seem to take the money and run. I
believe the area needs restaurants
open year-round."
John Downes said SmilingJack's
plansto deliverlunchesonpushcarts
in the downtown area as well.
"You've got to understand every-
body'scaution,"Sgt. Sean Sweeney
of the Barnstable Police told the
applicants. "Everybody starts out
with 'family restaurant.'"
The licensing board granted the
licenses and restricted the play-
ing or performing of music to the
indoors.
No grins for Gringo's...

If you'vebeen involved insoftware
development , you know what it's
like - part art, part science, part
pressure cooker, and a lot of herd-
ing cats!
You need both inspiration and
coordination. You need intense
individual effort and the ability to
connect that effort into awhole.You
need technology, marketing, and
project management to interact
with each other ... and with sales,
and with distribution, and with
customer doc and with support and
with... You need to test, and test,
and then test some more. Every
industry believes it is unique, but
I don't think there is anything else
quite like software.
I'll be curious to see what Vista is
like when it is ready for prime time
-and in the meanwhile,I'll applaud
Microsoft for taking hits today to
make a solid product in 2007.
For THE BIONIC BODY!
No, you don't get a new body to
keep, but you do get to hear Bioness
CEO Yitzhak Zilberman share the
latest cutting edge research on the
very real science and technology
of bionics and see some working
examples of the technology in
action
Don't miss it! First Friday: April
7 at the Cape Codder Resort and
Spa in Hyannis. Register at www.
