BAY VIEW STOCK FARM, Circa 1930
Barnstable Land Trust and
The Nature Conservancy have
joined forces to protect one of
West Barnstable'smost scenic
treasures -Bay View Farm. To
complete the acquisition,BLT
andTNCmustraisethe remain-
ing $288,000 before June 30.
The property at 1247 Main
Street is just south of where
Route 6A crosses the railroad
track. The long meadow in
front of the house is reminis-
cent of abygone era when open
fields and farms once covered
our landscapes.
The Bay View Stock Farm
once comprised 600 acres. It
wasaworkingfarm untilabout
1928when afire consumed the
house and barn. The house as
now seen from Route 6A was
built around 1930. In 1941 the
house was sold together with
109 acres. In 2003, when the
family sold Bayview Farm, 30
acresof upland and salt marsh
remained.
While identifying prime par-
cels for acquisition, Bayview
Farm emerged as aprime can-
didate due to itssize and prox-
imity to coastal resources.
The Sandy Neck/Great
Marsh Area of Critical Envi-
ronmental Concern is a top
conservationpriorityfor many
regional, state, and national
conservation organizations
because of its high quality
barrier beach and extensive
salt marsh. The whole area is
part of a 14,000-acre coastal
ecosystem that stretches from
Dennisto Sandwich,providing
an important marine nursery
and a nesting and feeding
habitat for numerous migrat-
ing shorebirds.
Last year The Barnstable
Land Trust and the Mas-
sachusetts Chapter of The
Nature Conservancy worked
collaboratively on Phase 1 of
the Bayview Farm preserva-
tion plan. With help from the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
and the State Department of
Conservation and Recreation,
BLT acquired the 2-acre field
infront of the smallcapehouse
and 12-acres of salt marsh on
the north side of 6A.
The partnership of BLT and
TNCisnowhopingtocomplete
Phase 2 of the Bayview Farm
Project which includes 2 acres
of upland and 7.65 acres of salt
marsh and inter-tidal wetland.
Located on the south side of
Route 6A these 10 acres have
extensive frontage on Bridge
Creek. The field south and
west of the house abuts the
Town owned "1776" property
which is now known as the
Bridge Creek Conservation
Area. All of the land helps to
connect nearly 300 acres of
conservation land to the Great
Marsh ecosystem.
Through the work of BLT
and TNC, more than $500,000
has already been committed
from the State and Federal
Land and Water Conservation
funds $288,000 remains to be
raised before June 30"'.
"We are hoping that local
residents will agree that the
scenic integrity of the area
is an important community
asset and that they will dem-
onstrate their concern by
contributing to Phase 2 of
the Bayview Farm Project ,"
says Kristie Kapp of West
Barnstable.

tion Initiative send a check to Barnstable
Land Trust at P.O.Box 224, Cotuit, MA
