<$>Rumors of Volvo Minivan
Volvo is rumored to be considering a minivan for its product
line. Industry magazine Automotive News reported that the
company was conducting cold-weather testing on a prototype
of a minivan near the Artie Circle. The vehicle is reported to be
powered by the 3.2-liter, six-cylinder engine in the S80 and share
architecture with the S80 as well as the Ford Galaxy minivan
and the Ford S-Max crossover. A Volvo minivan would be a big
surprise to many people in the industry, as Volvo has long said
that minivan would not ever be in its product plans. Volvo has
denied that a minivan project is being considered.

Side Airbags Affect Crash Tests
Side airbags play a significant role in how some
cars perform in side impact crash tests. Recent
tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safetyshowed that the Pontiac G6tested
without side airbags received the group's lowest
rating of poor, while the version with side airbags
received the second-highest rating, acceptable.
The Ford Fusion without side airbags
also received a "poor "rating from the
Institute. While the Fusion with
side airbags was not tested,
Ford said it expected
the vehicle would
receive a higher
score when test-
ed. Side airbags
will be standard
equipment on j

the 2007 model
year, which goes
into production
this September. Other vehicles tested included
the 2006 BMW 3 Series and the Lexus IS, which
both earned scores of "good", and the 2006 Acura
TSX and Infiniti G35,whichboth scored "accept-
able" in side tests.

could be the fourth vehicle
in its lineup. The 101EX
coupe was shown at the
recent Geneva Auto Show.
The vehicle is a coupe ver-
sion of its Phantom, but is
ten inches shorter than its
sedan counterpart. Auto-
motive insiders say that

Large Van
Nissan is considering
adding a full-size van to
its line-up. Such a vehicle
would be designed to com-
pete with the Ford E-Series
van, the Chevrolet Express
and the Dodge Sprinter. If
Nissan decided to produce
such a vehicle, it would
likely be built on the same
platform as its SUVs, the
Nissan Armada and Infiniti
QX56, and its Titan pickup.
If Nissan moves forward
with the plan, it would be
at least 2008 before such a
vehicle arrive at
dealers.

Vehicle For
Saab
Saab will get
the crossover
vehicle that has
long been planned
for the brand. The
status of the vehi-
cle has been up in
the air for a while
now, as parent
company General
Motors has debat-
ed over whether
it could afford to
allow Saab to add
another vehicle.
It has now ry^r
decided that (Jb
adding the crossover would
likely help bring the brand
to profitability, something
it has been struggling with
recently. Details of the
crossover vehicle have not
yet been announced, but it
may be built on the same
line as another GM cross-
over, such as the Cadillac
SRX.
