BizWiz conference...
plete when Steinberg hired
an 18-year-old intern from
Brookline by way of Yale.
Theo Epstein didn't even
know how to drive, but his
depth ofbaseballknowledge
was enormous.
The friends moved on to
SanDiego and success with
the Padres before the call
came to come to Fenway.
Steinberg and company
packed up to leave La Jolla,
where he had a condo on
the beach.
Ensconced with the Sox,
the quartet set about im-
proving relations with the
media,theteam andthe fans
whilekeeping its eyes on the
prize.The World Champion-
ship came in 2004.
Recallingthe stunning run
made by the Sox when they
were one game from elimi-
nation, Steinberg declared ,
"Reality is not determined
by that which has already
taken place. Reality is still
your vision of what can
be."
Many Visions, One
Meeting
Visions of what can be
danced in the heads of Biz-
Wiz attendees astheymoved
past dozens of booths dis-
playing the latest products
and service information.
Meanwhile , small-group
sessions covered ways to
"Knock One Out ofthe Park"
in sending a corporate mes-
sage, or how to understand
that e-commerceis"AWhole
New Ball Game."
One group, hosted by
Jemma Lambert of Suffolk
University and Claudia Bor-
den-Brierly, an advocacy
specialist for the Town of
Barnstable, took as its title
YogiBerra'simmortal,"The
future ain't what it used to
be."
Baby Boomers entering
their senior years, and how
to cater to their needs and
those of their elders, com-
prised the agenda. It's an
age cohort with plenty of
money to spend, and con-
trary to some impressions,
is still spending it.
People born between 1946
and 1964 see themselves
as 10 to 20 years younger
than their chronological
age ("More like 30 or 40," a
wiseacre cracked from the
audience ). Nevertheless ,
things are starting to go
downhill, and the wise mer-
chandiser will start making
accommodations now.
Cutting down on loud
noise in shops and over-
stimulatingdisplaysbacked
with information in tiny
print is one way to attract
aging Boomers as well as
full-blown senior citizens.
Hearing, vision, and elastic-
ity of joints, muscles and
skin go south.
Store owners should sim-
ply signage and decor, use
lighting that reduces glare,
and offer simple aids. One
Yarmouth restaurant has a
pass-around pair of reading
glasses for studying those
fine-print menus in dark
corners.
