About 100 people wined, dined and danced the night away at the Cape & Islands United Way Oscar Weekend on Cape Cod featuring the first Sand Dollar Ball at the Chatham Bars Inn. A champagne reception accompanied with music from the movies sung and played by soloist Lisa Jason and pianist Brian Morris, kicked off the evening, followed by dinner and dancing to the big band sound of The Dreamers.The event was sponsored by Shepley Wood Products, Marvin Windows and Doors, Sovereign Bank and Oceanl04. Allproceeds willgo to support the funding efforts of the Cape &Islands United Way. Flowers for the evening were provided by Patrice Milley. Having a Ball with Oscar FOCUS ON FIBER -An exhibitiion of fiber artthatfocuses on faces andfiguresis on display March 21through May 14 at the Cahoon Museum of American Art in Cotuit. Forty-nine will show treatments ranging from stylized to realistic. Embroidery, hooked rugs, yarn paintings, tapestry, threadwork and more can be seen. A reception with John Miller on piano is March 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. JB3 -BOOKS: WB story hour Thursday mornings Ages 3 to 5 are invited to attend story hour at Whelden Library in West Barnstable Thursday mornings from 10 to 11. Call the library on Route 149 to regis- ter: 508-362-2262. Osterville Library Book Sale The Friends of the Osterville Village Library hosts weekly book sales in the library's basement. This week, sales will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to noon. The library recently received a gift of a number of first edition books. What's cooking with Cook? Claire Cook, author of Must Love Dogs, Multiple Choice and more, discusses and signs her work March 28 at 7 p.m. at the Brewster Ladies' Library, Route 6A in Brewster. Osterville Library Tuesdays through the end of May, Osterville Free Library hosts story time for 3- to 5-year-olds from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Pre-registration is recommended; call 508-428-5757. A book sale is held March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon and again March 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sturgis Library news Ongoing book sales are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. and Satur- days from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are always accepted. Books wanted The GoodStart Program is looking for new and gently used books for distribution to the children of the community. Bring donations to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children at 206 Breeds Hill Road in Hyannis week- days between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Barnes & Noble Tuesday toddler story time is at 10 a.m. with preschool storytime every Wednes- day at 11 a.m.; then on Fridays there is a special story time for school-age children at 7 p.m. The store is located at 769 Route 132 in the Cape Cod Mall. Marstons Mills story hours and more The Marstons Mills Public Library invites children of all ages to weekly story hours on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Also on Tuesdays, at 4:15 p.m., there is a story hour for chil- dren in preschool through grade 2, crafts included. Grades 4 through 7 are invited to play board games from 4 to 6 p.m. Storytimes and more at Eastham Public Library The Eastham Public Library has weekly storytime every Friday at 10:30 a.m. for children up to age 5. A craft session follows. The library also hosts a monthly "Magic The Gathering" trading card game program for ages 11 and up the first Tuesday of each month from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. All are free but you must sign up in advance. j4 -rANVAT Barnstable Cape Cod Art Association The Cape Cod Art Association, 3480 Route 6A in Barnstable, is offering courses in watercolor painting, oil painting, life drawing, digital photography and more. The Association is accepting student members ages 14 to 22 with a member- ship fee of $15 a year, which includes discounts on classes, newsletter subscrip- tion and ability to exhibit and sell work. Cape Cod Art Association members art show Cape Cod Art Association is hosting its second Artist Members Show for 2006 through April 3 at its galleries at 3480 Route 6A in Barnstable Village. Multiple works will be featured in the mediums of pastel, watercolor, photography, oil, acrylic and mixed media. The opening reception and awards will take place on Sunday, March 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Children's art class offerings Cape Cod Art Association's Children's Art Classes include Art for Mommy & Me (ages 2-3), offered Tuesdays; Books We Love: Art for New Readers (ages 3-6), offered Tuesdays and Fridays; Art Discov- ery (ages 3-4), offered Thursday mornings and afternoons; and Saturday Art Discov- ery (ages 5-7 and 8-10).
