Fall into London Bridges
Main Street shop
makes fashion fun
By Kathleen Manwaring

KATHLEEN MANWARING PHOTOS
THE LATEST MODELS - London Hall (right), owner/operator of London Bridges Women's
Clothing and Accessories , displays some shop wares with local model Sophie Moeller. Hall's
boutique is located at 349 Main St. in Hyannis.
Looking for a women's clothing
shop that's a refreshing diversion
from the ordinary? How about a
shop owner with as much flair as
her fashions?
Once upon a time, London Hall
walked the runways as a model in
New York City. She also had stints
on As the World Turns and One
Life to Live , two popular daytime
soap operas, and was once a pro-
moter for Mike Tyson - before his
biting problem.
Eight years ago Hall came to
Cape Cod after "marrying a local"
and found her way once again into
the clothing business, this time in
sales. "I started out at Plush and
Plunder, where the owner taught
me the ropes," she said. "Then I
opened my own shop."
That shop would be London
Bridges, which spent many years
in Yarmouth before settling com-
fortably in Hyannis almost a year
ago. "When I noticed the change
on Main Street and saw that peo-
ple were cleaning it up, I wanted
to be a part of it," said Hall.
Hall credits the Main Street As-
sociation with helping her to feel
welcome. "Hyannis really stands
behind the small businesses," she
said. "I can't tell you how wonder-
ful they've been."
Although traffic into the shop
was heavier in the summer, Hall
predicts that trend will change in
years to come. In her opinion, dur-
ing the next 10 years, year-round
business will increase greatly.
It helps that Hyannis is open to
diversity. "It feels more like a small
city," Hall said. "This neighbor-
hood has become more upscale
and safer."
While in Yarmouth, Hall's unique
window displays featuring boldly
designed mannequins raised a
number of eyebrows, eventually
leading to serious problems be-
tween Hall and the town's busi-
ness officials. "I just lost so much
business I had to move," she said.
In Hyannis, the creative store-
front and window have been well-
received. "Whatever excitement I
have in my window, they support ,"
said Hall speaking of her fellow
merchants.
Indeed , the mannequins in the
window and outside the store
are most definitely eye-catching.
Several are decorated with p apier
mache or painted designs and one
wears a lampshade adorned with
Marilyn Monroe 's face, including
that infamous beauty mark.
The gamine faux ladies are sim-
ply a reflection of the interior of
London Bridges, where the fash-
ion-forward will find total nirvana.
"My clothes are contemporary
with an edge," said Hall, who often
travels to Paris to view outfits and
jewelry collections. Label watch-
ers will appreciate finds such as
Betsey Johnson and ABS by Allen
Schwartz.
For prom season. Hall has
stocked the shop with an array of
finery both traditional and untra-
ditional. Traditional dress seek-
ers will find rich hues and classic
designs. Those favoring an untra-
ditional frock will delight in vivid
colors and a number of styles,
including a replica of the very
dress Marilyn Monroe wore when
she serenaded Camelot's own JFK
on his birthday. You know, the one
she had to be sewn into? To distin-
guish itself as a copy, this gown is
embellished from head to toe with
thousands of tiny sparkling beads,
which simply add to its allure.
In her advertising and on her
Web site Hall uses local mod-
els from high schoolers to UPS
drivers, and even a local pooch.
"We make fashion fun ," she said.
"That's what it's supposed to be."
