DAVID STILL II PHOTO REMEMBERING A MENTOR - During the competition's intermission, BHS winter percussion director JohnJamison dedicated the competition to Steve Moulaison, who died Feb. 18atthe age of 60. Moulaison started winter percussion at BHS 18 years ago before moving onto Dennis-Yarmouth High School, where he started that school's program. Jamison asked the audience to take some time to thinkaboutthe dedication of thestudents, to think about music and to think about Moulaison. Her shell bears the concentric circles children will need to look for on the scavenger hunt available at the front desk. In a corner tank there appears to be nothing more than a dusting of sand.Along stare reveals the presence of baby horseshoe crabs scuttling along. Shells from crabs of various ages are next to the tank, giving viewers a startling visual of ju st how big these creatures get. The tidepools will win everyone over. On one side are waving sea anemones, moon snails, sand dollars and a huge scallop that snaps its shell and spits water when held by museum volunteer Lindsay Walls. On the other side, almost invis- ible in the sand, are flounder. Volunteer Evan Drake welcomes the opportunity to tell visitors about how their eyes migrate to the same side of the head giving this fish a most unusual ap- pearance. Seahorses ROBERT TUCKER/FOCALPOINT STUDIO PHOTO MAKING FUN - Edward Etsen and Karen McPherson lend their talents to The Chatham Drama Guild's production of Later Life, a play about a love story that doesn't necessarily end happily ever after. CONTINUED FROM PAGE C:1 guests finishes the scene. For all the actors' enthusiasm, however, Later Life can- not bring itself out of the rut dug by its melodramatic plot. Austin and Ruth discuss their problems and make it evident that they have too much to deal with to ever be truly free for each other. The problems the pair deals with are many, and each weighs on the audience. After a while, all this becomes a little much. The play'shints at symbolismslowly become fluorescent signs pointing toward it. A setting sun and a sappy love song break the realistic air. Yetdespite the heavy subject matter and melodramatic atmosphere, Later Life is an extremely well acted, well thought out, and well directed play. Anyone looking for an evening extolling the virtues of love and fate won't enjoy it. But anyone looking to see a quality production of a fresh , unique play will. "Everyone has a story," says Etsen's ebullient south- erner Ted. And Later Life tells a good one about attrac- tion, betrayal, and, ultimately, survival. Later Life \s at the Chatham Drama Guild on Crowell Road Thursdays , Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through March 26. For tickets ($16 adults, $10 students), call 508-945-0510.
