From your Councilor...

environment. I want to thank Al
Baker for educating me on this
important work and, I hope, all
of you.
I am now Chair of the Ap-
pointments Committee for
the Town Council and, having
reflected on how much can be
done when interested citizens
come together for something
they believe in, hope you con-
sider volunteering for the many
opportunities available to you
to contribute to the Town of
Barnstable. I know that much
of the good and important
work by the Town could not
be accomplished without the
assistance of the many skilled
and dedicated members of 43
committees. There is a place
for your contribution.
To make the process easier,
we have instituted a simple ap-
plication for interested parties.
These are available at the vari-
ous libraries, the Information
Center in the lobby of Town
Hall, the Senior Center and on
the town's Web site, www.town.
barnstable.ma.us. Look in the
right-hand column under Press
Box and click on Join a Com-
mittee or Commission and then
click on Board/Committee/
Commission Application Form.
Hope to hear from you soon.
The Appointments Commit-
tee will respond to your request
regarding available openings
and a time to meet with you.
Thank you in advance for your
interest.
I would urge everyone to look
for the most recent newslet-
ter from the Marstons Mills
Library and in particular the
letter from Sue Martin regard-
ing the fiscal issues facing
the Library. The Library is an
important center of our Village
and it is facing a serious short-
fall which may result in a cut
back of important services to
a wide segment of our village.
Ms Martin asks if "there is a
willingness to combine forces
to maintain a library pres-
ence in Marstons Mills." I fell
strongly that there is.
The issue is that our librar-
ies are not Town libraries, but
in fact private entities, par-
tially supported by the Town,
but mainly supported by local
resident contributions and
foundation grants for special
programs. Marstons Mills is
the third largest village in the
town with a large population of
seniors, children and families
using the Library resources.
The prospect of cutting staff ,
which results in cutting hours
and programs, does not seem
to meet the expressed needs of
our Village.
The library has asked for our
input. To date, only about 35%
of us have made a contribution
to the Library. Please keep this
in mind in the weeks ahead and
work with the Library to meet
its fiscal goal before the end of
spring. It is important to keep
in mind that the Library is so
well used, that there is also a
goal for expansion to meet the
demand for services , but that
will not happen if yearly opera-
tion goals are not met. Let's
help to keep this wonderful
asset.
As you read this, I'm off on
vacation to Florida , but will be
back by mid March. I'll try to
bring the warm weather with
me. Again, thank you for giving
me the opportunity to serve.
