Jeanne M. Bearse, 75
Hyannis - Jeanne Marie Bearse,
75,aHyannisresident for more than
55years, died Feb. 28, 2006, at Cape
Cod Hospital.
Shewasthe wife ofthe lateCharles
Bearse.
Mrs. Bearse was born, raised and
educated in New Bedford.
She graduated from UMass-Dart-
mouth and was a teacher in the
Cotuit and Barnstable school sys-
tems.
Shewas activewiththe St.Francis
XavierWomen'sGuildandBarnstable
Senior Center. She loved animals,
especially her cat, Snoopy. She was
also an avid birdwatcher.
Survivors include two nieces,
Beverly McLamore of Nevada and
Brenda Bernat of Florida.
Jeannette Bowes, 89
Osterville - Jeannette Bowes,
89, died March 1, 2006, at Mary
McCarthy Hospice House in East
Sandwich.
She was the wife of the late John
"Jerry" Bowes.
Mrs.Bowes was born, raised and
educated inBrookline.Sheattended
Massachusetts School of Art and
Fanny Farmer's cooking school.
She owned and operated Jean-
nette Bowes Catering for 27 years
and enjoyed putting on functions in
andaroundtheHyannisport,Wianno
and Oyster Harbors areas.
She was a multi-term president
of Our Lady of Assumption Guild in
Osterville, former president of the
Barnstable Republican Club and a
former delegate to the Republican
NationalCommittee.She alsosat on
the board of the MSPCC and Child
and Family Services of Cape Cod.
Survivors include three daugh-
ters, Terry Bergeson of Olympia,
Wash.,Diane Bowes of Hyannis and
Karen Beaton of Marstons Mills and
Naples,Fla.;two sons,John J.Bowes
Jr. of Hyannis and Jimmy Bowes of
Centerville; abrother,BlakeThaxter
of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Hing-
ham; seven grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at Our Lady of the Assumption
Church in Osterville. Burial was in
Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

David A. Brewer, 40
South Yarmouth- David A. Brewer,
40, died Feb. 25, 2006, at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis.
Mr. Brewer was born in Cam-
bridge and raised in Allston and
Yarmouth.
He graduated from Dennis-
Yarmouth Regional High School's
special needs program and worked
for Cape Abilities for the past 18
years.
He was a lifelong participant in
Special Olympics and the ARC.
Survivors include his parents ,
Inge (Eichleiter) Brewer of South
Yarmouth and John H. Brewer of
West Barnstable; a brother, Gary
Brewer of Hull; and his maternal
grandmother, Frances Coogias of
Harwich.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
at St. Pius X Church in South
Yarmouth.

Mary Butler
Osterville -Mary (Orlando) Butler,
an Osterville resident for more than
50 years, died unexpectedly Feb. 26,
2006, in Hyannis.
Shewasthe wifeofWalterH.Butler,
who died in 1998. They were married
for more than 45 years.
Mrs. Butler was born and edu-
cated in Reading, Pa., graduated
from St.Peter'sCatholic High School
and attended St. Joseph's Nursing
School.
Asaregistered nurse,shecontinued
her education in operating room an-
esthesiology at the Mayo Clinic.
She worked at Cape Cod Hospital
and the Greenery and did private-
duty nursing, caring for former
ambassador Joseph P Kennedy of
Hyannisport until his death.
She most recently gave flu shots
for the town of Barnstable.
She loved spending time with her
family and was an avid shopper,
gardener and reader. She traveled
to countries including Spain, Italy,
Ireland and England, and also loved
Arizona and Florida,especiallyMarco
Island.
Survivors include six children,
MaryE.Butler-Minorof SouthDennis,
Tracey Butler Mitchell of Centerville,
Walter H. Butler II of Buzzards Bay,
John O. Butler of Dennisport, Kath-
leen F.Butler of Yarmouthport and
SusanButler Nolan ofParadiseValley,
Ariz.; a sister, Frances Gabrielli of
Reading, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and
many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be at
a later date.

Elizabeth A. 'Betty' Collins, 77
Montpelier, Vt. - Elizabeth Ann
"Betty" Collins, 77, died Feb. 26,
2006, in Burlington after a long ill-
ness with Parkinson's disease.
She was the wife of the late Da-
vid S. Collins. They were married
in 1949.
Mrs. Collins was born in Cam-
bridge , raised and educated in
Scituate , and attended Green
Mountain College in Poultney.
She and her family lived in many
places, including Rhode Island,
Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsyl-
vania, New Jersey, New York, New
Hampshire, Vermont, Texas and
Florida.Duringher travels, shelived
in Hyannisport from 1978 to 1990.
She was knownfor her laugh and
her hosting skills.
Survivors include three children,
Jeffrey H. Collins of Arcadia, Fla.,
Judith A. Collins of Montpelier
and Janet L. Sawtelle of Carroll-
ton, Texas; and grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
William G. Doherty Jr., 83
Yarmouthport - William G. Doherty
Jr., 83, died March 1, 2006 , at his
home.
He was the husband of Marilyn
(Moore) Doherty.
Mr. Doherty was born in Webster,
raised and educated inNewton,gradu-
ated from Newton High School and
attended Boston University.
He was a Navy pilot during World
War II and was honorably discharged
as an ensign in 1944.
For manyyears,hewasnationalsales
director for Acme Visible Records,
based in Crozet, Va. He retired to
Yarmouthportin 1982from Charlottes-
ville, Va. He also lived in Yardley,Pa.
For the past 10 years, he worked
for a whale watch company out of
Barnstable Harbor and was a bar-
tender for the Barnstable Tavern.
He enjoyed dancingand spending
time with his family and dogs.
Besides his wife, survivors in-
clude two sons, Gregory Doherty
of Holliston and Stephen Doherty
of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a daughter,
Beverly Robinson of Orlando, Fla.;
a sister, Mary-Louise Spilman of
Reston,Va.;sixgrandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.

Arthur E. Erickson Sr, 83
Hanson - Arthur E. Erickson, 83,
formerly of Marstons Mills, died
Feb. 24, 2006, at his home.
He was the husband of Norma J.
(Sprague) Erickson.
Mr. Erickson was born and edu-
cated in Boston. He was a self-
employed painter for more than 50
years, working around the Boston
area.
He lived in Marstons Mills for
more than 25 years before moving
to Hanson a snort time ago.
He enjoyed model trains and golf-
ing.HewasamemberoftheMonday
Night Cape Cod Rail Club and the
South Shore Rail Club.
Besideshiswife,survivorsinclude
two children,Arthur E. Erickson Jr.,
of Hanson and Deborah A. Peters
of Florida; abrother, Mils Erickson
of Dedham; three grandchildren;
two great grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews.
A service was held at Leighton-
Mac-KinnonFuneralHome inHan-
son. Burial is at a later date.

Robert F. Gavin, 90
Centerville -Maj. Robert F.Gavin,
90, died Feb. 19, 2006, at Cape
Regency Rehabilitation & Nursing
Center.
He was the husband of the late
Helen Cuttle Grant for more than
25 years.
He was born in Jamaica Plain
and graduated from Winthrop High
School in 1932.
In 1941, he was drafted for a year
of militarytraining.Hewas assigned
to the Medical Detachment, 101st
Infantry. After Pearl Harbor, he
was transferred to the Army Air
Forces. He was commissioned a
second lieutenant navigator and
served in the Pacific. Among the
many honors he received was the
Distinguished Flying Cross with
oak leaf cluster.
After the war, he joined the Mas-
sachusetts Air National Guard
and was sent to Korea. He was
later assigned to the Strategic Air
Command at Westover Field in
Chicopoe.
He alsoworked for the MBTAand
the U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include a sister, Bar-
bara V.Boland of Newmarket, N.H.;
and a nephew.
Burial was at Massachusetts Na-
tional Cemetery in Bourne.
Ellen O. Lindgren, 87
West Yarmouth - Ellen O.Lindgren,
87, died Feb. 22, 2006, at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis after a brief
illness.
Born in Worcester, Miss Lindgren
graduated from Keene High Schoolin
New Hampshire and from Peter Bent
Brigham Hospital School of Nursing
in Boston.
Commissioned in the Navy Nurse
Corps in 1943duringWorld WarII, she
was stationed at severalinstallations
on the East and West coasts; Glen-
wood Springs, Colo.,and Naples,Italy.
She alsoserved aboard atroop trans-
port between Seattle and Japan.
Miss Lindgren retired in 1968 as
a lieutenant commander from the
National Naval Medical Center in
Bethesda, Md., after 20 years of
service.
After her retirement she initially
lived in Chatham while serving as
director of nursing at Centerville
Nursing Home.
In 1972 she moved to Centerville,
where she was co-manager of the
Hospice Thrift Shop in Barnstable
until 2003, when she moved to West
Yarmouth.
She was a member of the Finnish-
American Society of Cape Cod. She
enjoyed gardening, travel,music and
the company of friends and family.
Survivors include a cousin, Viola
McLoughlin of West Yarmouth.
A memorial service was held at
First Lutheran Church in West
Barnstable.

Rodger O. Myers, 62
Hyannis - Rodger 0. Myers, 62,
died unexpectedly Feb. 24, 2006,
at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief
illness.
He was born in Natchez, Miss.,
graduated from Marion Harding
High School in 1962 and earned a
bachelor's degree from Anna Maria
College.
He had a decorated Air Force
career that spanned half his life. He
started in the K-9 unit and worked
through the ranks to become a chief
master sergeant, servinginVietnam
and earning several awards includ-
ing the Air Force Achievement, Air
Force Commendation and National
Defense Service medals; Air Force
Training Ribbon; and Air Force
Longevity Service Award.
Survivors include two daughters,
Toni Owen of Bangor, Maine, and
April Buffington of South Dennis;
a son, Troy H. Myers of Barnstable
and Weymouth; and seven grand-
children.
He was also the father of the late
Rebecca Myers.
Burial was in Massachusetts Na-
tional Cemetery in Bourne.
Hilda Peltz Pass, 92
Silver Spring, Md. - Hilda Peltz
Pass, 92, died Feb. 24, 2006, at Sub-
urban Hospital in Bethesda.
She was the wife of Joseph Pass,
who died in 1986.
Born in Baltimore,Mrs. Pass was
raised in Chicago before moving to
Newton,where she and her husband
were the owners of Pass Cleaners.
She later moved to Hyannis,
where she became a religious
school teacher at the Cape Cod
Synagogue.
She moved to the Washington
area in the late 1980s, and lived
for a time in both Virginia and
Maryland.
She enjoyed cooking and enter-
taining.
Survivors include three children,
Jacqueline Gropman of Burke, Pa.;
Bonna Elfant of State College, Pa.,
and David Pass of Silver Spring; a
brother, David Peltz of Chicago; a
sister,Leanora Hellman of Newton;
five grandchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.
Services were held at Cape Cod
Synagogue in Hyannis. Burial fol-
lowed in Mosswood Cemetery in
Cotuit.
Elizabeth M. Phillips, 76
Centerville - Elizabeth M.
(Finnegan ) Phillips, 76, died Feb.
24, 2006, at Cape Cod Hospital in
Hyannis.
She was the wife of Norman J. I
Phillips, who died in 2003. They I
were married in 1950.
Mrs.Phillipswasborn and raised
in Fall River and graduated from
Sacred Heart Academy.She spent
summers in Portsmouth, R.I.
After her marriage she lived in
Connecticut, where she raised her
family.After the death of her hus- »
band, she moved to Cape Cod. '
She loved cooking and garden- jj
ing, and especiallyloved Christmas
cooking and decorating.
Survivorsinclude two sons, Rich- '
ard Phillips of New Hampshire and
Scott Phillips of Tolland, Conn.; '
two daughters, Carol Pitonyak
of Glastonbury, Conn., and Jane
Brajczewski of Osterville; a sister, '

John P. Salvi

of Wellesley, died Feb. 24, 2006, at j
Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
He was the husband of Janice F.
(Ouimet) Salvi.
Mr. Salvi was born in Everett
and graduated from WellesleyHigh
School. He served for four years
in the Army and was a decorated
World War II veteran.
He retired to Osterville in 1981 ;
afterworkingat Filene'sinWellesley
for 44 years. ,
He enjoyed golf, gardening and
spending time with his grandchil-
dren.

F.Smith Sr, formerly of Barnstable,
died March 2, 2006.
He was the husband of Mary, •
(Carden) Smith for 64 years.
Mr. Smithwas raised in Salem,and
graduated from SalemState Teachers-
College. He earned a masters from
Harvard University and a Certificate j
ofGraduate Studyfrom the University
of Connecticut.
He served in the Coast Guard dur-
ing World War II.
He was the former superintendent
of schools in Topsfield-Wenham, En-
field , Conn., Saugus., and Lawrence.
He was known as a champion of
children. < -

Russell R. Van Norman, 88
Marstons Mills - Russell R. Van
Norman, 88, formerly of Rockaway,
N.J., died March 2, 2006,at Cape Cod
Hospital in Hyannis.
He wasthe husband of the late Eu-
genia (Wisniewski) Van Norman.
Mr.VanNormanwasborn in Beth-
lehem, Pa., and lived for many years
in Rockaway before moving to the
Cape in 1972.
He served in the Army and was "
stationed in Northern Africa during
World War II.
Mr.VanNorman was a baker who
enjoyed model ship building. He
was also active in the Boy Scouts,
an avid fly fisherman and loved to
tie flies.
He was a member of the Knights
of Columbus and the American
Legion.
Survivors include a son, Russell
E. Van Norman of Marstons Mills;
a daughter, Kathleen Haberstroh
of Mine Hill, N.J.; three brothers,
Dick Van Norman of Pennsylvania,
Dean Van Norman of California
and Vince Van Norman of Orleans;
a sister, Gail Damelio of Stanhope,
N.J.; three grandchildren; and four '
great-grandchildren.
