Rent (PG B)
By John Walker
arts@barnstablepatriot.com
Tasteis a funny thing. My taste
is definitelynot musicals.I recently
met someone that declared the two
best movie musicals ever made were
Grease and Popeye.
"What!?" I shouted at him. "The
musical, big screen adaptation of the
popular comic strip Popeyel The so
awful it makes you want to repeatedly
punch yourself in the face Popeyel
The same Popeye staring Robin Wil-
liams I saw as a child and still bare
the emotional scars?"
"Yes"was his calm response. "It
was a great film with some truly fan-
tastic songs."
His admission made me begin to
doubt the very fabric of time and
space. How could someone seemingly
so normal actually enjoy that awful,
miserable film? How even could a
blind/deaf ravingmaniac like Popeyel
How could one film make me want to
curl up in the fetal position every time
someone says the word musical? Was
I missingsomething?
It was then that I began to ques-
tion my lifelong hatred of musicals.
Thinking back through my life I
remember watching Disney'sRobin
Hood and wanting to cry every time
the animated characters broke out
into song, and that wasjust last week.
I decided that I would give musicals
a second chance. What better way to
do that then to check out Rent upon
its DVD release. The positive word
of mouth surrounding the original
Broadway play made me thinkthat
this was the musical that would
change my perception on all musicals.
Rent was an enormously popular
Broadway hit.It won both a Tony
Award and a Pulitzer Prize. It became
one of the top ten longest running
musical on Broadway and earned over
210 million dollars during its' New
Yorkrun. It seemed only natural for
Hollywood to turn Rent into a motion
picture.
Much the same way it seems natu-
ral to fuse a chimpanzee's head to a
Rhinoceros's body.Sure there have
been some great recent examples
of Broadway hit's being made into
motion pictures. Takefor instance...
um...well...um, I'll get back to you on
that.
I watched Rent. I tried to like it. I
tried to see what other people loved
about the popular musical. I des-
perately attempted to come to grips
with my strong aversion to musicals. I
failed at all attempts.
My first problem with Rent is the
fact that I disliked every character
I was supposed to like and liked the
one character who was supposed to
be the sell-out bad guy.
Why did I dislike these characters?
Maybe for the fact that they start the
movie singingabout how tough it is
to be struggling artists and owing
money for thingslike rent, food and
heat yet by the end of the song and in
future references it becomes crystal
clear that they don't pay rent, or for
that matter even attempt to pay rent.
From the annoyingfilmmakerto
the self obsessed diva Maureen. I
disliked them all.
There is a struggling songwriter
who laments being a starving artist
yet he hasn't written a song in over
a year.I guess by his definition I am
also a strugglingsongwriter as well as
an artist, pianist, astronaut and Presi-
dent of France since I have done none
of those things in the last year either.
Secondly,if you are a struggling art-
ist and you have absolutely no money
for thingslike heat, electricity and
rent yet you are lucky enough to have
a friend (who they vilify) help you out
by letting it slide then what do you
possibly have to whine about?
Then there is the fact that everyone
in this play seems to be HIV positive.
I am a germ freak and cannot watch a
film or show about diseases or genetic
conditions without becoming para-
noid that I either have or am going to
contract that disease or condition.
Mask had me obsessed that I could
develop craniodiaphyseal dysphasia,
and Brian's Song made me worry
about cancer (I also have to note
that THE Shaggy D.A. made me
briefly once worry about turninginto
a dog) .
While the subject matter is heavy
it is done in a positive way because of
the characters reaction that they will
live life and enjoy the love of friends
while they still have time on earth. So
please don't let the content of the film
dissuade you. Let the music do that.
Every song in the film bothered me.
It seemed as if the characters were
either singingabout important issues,
mundane tasks or simply whiningto
music. I didn't find one of the songs
enjoyable. Which is tough when the
film consists primarilyof singing.
"525,600 minutes"is a line from the
opening number entitled Seasons of
Love. Coincidentally,the film seems
to take 525,600 minutes. The song is
nice enough. I could see how people
like it. It just seems to me like some-
thing Up With People would have
sang at a half-time show duringthe
seventies.
So there you have it. I didn't like
the characters, the songs or the basic
principle of the film that no one can
impose a lifestyle on these bunch of
free spirited artists yet they can cer-
tainly sit back and criticize everyone
who does not share similar beliefs.
If you are interested in renting
Rent then go ahead. If you are a fan
of musicalsthen I am sure it's really
good from what I have been told. If
your taste is similar to minewhen it
comes to musicals than Rent certainly
is not going to change your opinions
and make you love musicals.
But then again I could be wrong.
I actually met someone who loved
Popeye.

egantly designed masks and costumes
by Sr.Huai-KuangMiao,theproduction
certainly warrants the reprise.
Haig,whoalsoplaysthree characters,
has created a production that is both
easily accessible to the ear and attrac-
tive and lively to the eye.
The story is of a man to whom God
hassent hismessenger Death to deliver
before him. Of course protestation is
the first response, but the inevitable
last steps oflife'sjourneys are softened
somewhat when Everyman is told he
may bring someone along.
Everymanturnsto hisfriendsFellow-
ship, Cousin, Kindred, Goods, Good-
Deeds, Confession, Strength, Discre-
tion,Five-Wits, Beauty and Knowledge
to accompany him, but all ultimately
refuse. All,that is, but the weakest and
smallest of them: Good-Deeds. Indeed
this is a story of Do Unto Others, and
respect thy Creator, for the Judgment
Day often comes quickly and without
much warning.
Playingthe part of Everyman, Brad-
ford Luster is wonderfully clear of
tongue and emotion. He handles the
momentous number of speeches flaw-
lessly.
The rest of the ensemble -Rachel
McKendree,VickyKanaga,David Bush-
nell, Luke Norman, Chris Kanaga, and
Haig-are alsowellrehearsed and shine
in a very illuminatingproduction.
The very first lines of the one-hour
epic represent the best invitation
Stages Theater Company could issue
to those who wish to see an intelligent
and reverent play about us all:
"I pray you all give your audience,
And here this matter with rever-
ence,
By figure a moral play.
The Summoning of Everyman called
it is."
Performances of Everyman will be held at 8
tonight and tomorrow, and Sunday at 3 p.m. A
pre-performance lecture about the play begins
45 minutes before show time. For tickets, call
