Both the Army and the Marines are testing hybrid powerplants for its most popular military vehicles in the hopes that one will prove itself durable enough to be used in combat. The military is interested in hybrids for both tactical and security reasons. The electric motor in ahybrid vehicle would allow it to be driven silently at low speeds and would also provide a source of electricity when none was avail- able. The coupe will be a sibling to the Chevrolet Cobalt SS,though it will most likely be more performance-oriented. It will have Pontiac's styling character- istics. Pontiac has not had an entry- level coupe since it discontinued its Sunfire last year. The newcoupe will most likely launch as a 2007 model, while no specific date has been set for production to cease on the Mon- tana SV6 minivan. Be- cause this engine design has separate fuel chambers for fuel intake, combustion and exhaust, the danger of the hydrogen fuel backfir- ing is far less than with a traditional engine. Mazda willlease the RX-8Hydrogen RE to ahandful ofcompanies in Japan. am MH MM MM MM MM MM MH MM Pickups Recalled In recall news, Ford has issued a recall for its 2006 modelyear F-150andLincoln Mark LT pickups due to a warninglight for its anti-lock brake system that may mal- function. The problem will be corrected with a software fix. About 211,000 vehicles are affected. Separately, nearly 40,000 Dodge Dakota, Ram and Mitsubishi Raider pickups from the 2006 model year have been recalled for a possible problem with the rear anti-lock brakes, which could cause them to lock up prematurely. Owners of affected vehicleswillbe noti- fied of the recallsby mailand will be directed to a dealer where their vehicles will be repaired for free.
