Cardinal Spellman last Friday.
KEY FREETHROW -JillLyonwatches afree throw settle intothe basket
in the closing seconds of the BHS girls basketball team's 39-36 win
over Cardinal Spellman last Friday in Hyannis.
Monday's 61-51 win over
Needham got the BHS girls
basketball team into the
post-season.
Wednesday's regular-sea-
son closer, a 52-48 decision
over Durfee will earn the
Raiders a better seed in the
tournament.
"This is a good team. This
is going to be the best 11-9
team out there," coach Nancy
Freeman said after Wednes-
day's win. "We're going to
surprise a lot of people-"
But then she added, "I
hope our youth doesn't show
through."
It did at times Wednesday,
when the Raiders watched
most of a 15-point lead evap-
orate in the final four minutes
-in marked contrast to the
way the team played against
Needham in the Spartan
Classic at St. Mary's of Lynn.
"We played a great game
against Needham," enjoying a
41-21 second-half advantage,
Freeman said. "Wejust really
focused, good passes, nice
defense."
Sophomore Morgan Kend-
rew led the Raiders in scoring
with 21 points, including
eight of nine from the foul
line and three three-pointers.
Sophomore Jill Lyon added
13, senior Kourtney McNa-
mara had 11, sophomore Mar-
garet Cobb had 10 andjunior
Tashauna Ashmeade had six.
But after a crisp practice
Tuesday, the Raiders came
out hot-and-cold against
Durfee, finally building a
big lead only to see much of
it disappear in the closing .
minutes.
Kendrew again led all
scorers with 22, Lyon had 11,
McNamara 10, Cobb five and
Ashmeade four.
Ashmeade's 11rebounds
were a key, said Freeman.
"Thank goodness for her,"
said the coach. "She'sso
confident down underneath
the basket."
Lyon and Kendrew also
drew kudos.
"You can always count on
Morgan and Jill in a one-on-
one situation, they're our go-
to players," Freeman said.
The Raiders go into the
tournament having won four
of five, starting with a 60-42
win over Falmouth Feb. 16,
and continued with a nail-
biting 39-36 decision over
Cardinal Spellman the next
night, both in Hyannis. After
the Spellman game, Free-
man emerged from the locker
after her post-gamemeeting
with the team with both arms
raised in jubilation.
"Yes!Victory!" she said.
"We finally managed to win
down the end. Defense is
what did it."
The Raiders forced a hand-
ful of important turnovers
late as they held onto a lead
that several times went as
high as seven. Kendrew,
McNamara and Ashmeade
all had big steals down the
stretch, but Ashmeade's 14
rebounds may have been the
biggest key to the win.
"Tashauna played her heart
out again," Freeman said. "She
set the tone. She wanted it."
Lyon led the scoring
with 15 and added sixre-
bounds, while Ashmeade had
11points. Senior Liz Auger
had four boards to go with
two points. Morgan had eight
points and Cobb had three.
The Raiders absorbed a
narrow 56-52 loss to Glouces-
ter Sunday in the opening
round of the Spartan Classic.
Ashmeade and Kendrew each
scored 17 points.
The tournament seed-
ing committee meets today.
Barnstable's 11-9 record prob-
ably means the Raiders will
not play at home in the single-
elimination tournament,
which begins next week.

NO GOAL -Lisa Cunningham (6) breaks for the net to lookfor a rebound
after shooting the puck during the BHS girls hockey team's 6-4 loss to
Winchester Wednesday. Winchester's goalie made the stop.
DEFENSE COUNSEL - BHS girls hockey coach Kim Sullivan talks
strategy with her charges during a break in the action after Latin
Academy had cut the Raiders' lead from 5-1 to 5-3 with two goals less
than 30 seconds apart late in the second period Monday. Barnstable
regrouped and won 6-4.
JAMMIN' - Lisa Cunningham (6)
and Michelle Manning work from
both sides to try to pry the puck
loose from a Winchester player
duringthe BHSgirlshockeyteam's
6-4 loss Wednesday. '
The BHS girls hockey team
wrapped up the regular season
with a 14-5-1 record and is
awaiting Sunday's announce-
ment of the state tournament
pairingsin hopes of hosting its
first game next week.
The Raiders scored a6-4 win
Monday over Latin Academy,
the Boston Globe 's seventh-
ranked team in Eastern Mas-
sachusetts,then dropped a 6-4
decision to Winchester in the
last gameof the regular season
Wednesday,both Kennedy Me-
morial Rink in Hyannis.
"I think they're playing very
well ," BHS coach Kim Sul-
livan said of her charges after
Wednesday 's loss. "We're right
where we want to be. I thought
we had a good effort today,
a good team effort , a good
game."
Barnstablelost to Latin 6-3in
December after leading 3-0.
"We knew that they'd be a
tough team,"Sullivansaidafter
Monday's win. "We wanted to
get ahead of them, which we
did."
Barnstable built a5-1lead in
thefaceof the visitors'physical
attack that especiallytargeted
leading scorer Stephanie Scar-
pato, who was ejected from
the contest late in the second
period for takingfour penalties
in a game.
"I thought it got pretty
chippy and a little dirty, which
is unfortunate," Sullivan said.
"We have to stand our ground
and show we're not goingto be
taken advantage of."
Jessica Peacock took Scar-
pato's shifts and "did a great
job." Sullivan said. "She's got
a lot of speed. We've got kids
bench that are certainly ready
to go.
"Trenna (Field) , Kristen
(Logan ) and Jessica iBarron)
played agreat game,"the coach
added. 'Abby (VanWormer)just
continues to impress."
Junior Scarpato picked up
three goals, with senior Field
and sophomores Barron and
Peacock scoring the other
three. Logan, another sopho-
more , and Field each had
two assists, while Barron ,
VanWormer, senior Liz Cohen,
juniorKatie Kirwanand sopho-
more Michelle Manning added
one each.
Junior Natalie Cohen had 14
saves in the Barnstable goal.
Backup netminder Stepha-
nie Swider drew the start
Wednesday and played well.
"She made a lot of difficult
saves and did an excellent job
of keeping us in the game,"
Sullivan said.
Barnstable againgot anearly
lead on first-period goals by
Peacock (from Scarpato) and
Scarpato (from Peacock and
Manning), but Winchester
came back to tie it. The Raid-
ers went ahead 3-2 on Logan's
unassisted second-period tally,
but the visitors again tied it
before the second intermission,
then scored three quick goals
early in the third. Freshman
Claire Toffey'spower-play goal
pulled Barnfltable back within
two -freshman Lisa Cunning-
ham assisted -but they would
get no closer.
The Raiders likely will start
the tournament at home Mon-
day unless they get a first-
round bye, in which case their
first game probably would be
Wednesday.
"This team is going to be
ready," Sullivan said.

SCORE! - Andrew Singling (22),
Chad Crocker (28) and Mike
Donoghue (19) join Mike Lepore
(20) to celebrate one of his two
goals in the BHS boys hockey
team's 6-4 loss to Sandwich at
Kennedy Memorial Rink Friday.
It all comes down to
1 today for the BHS boys
j hockey team. A share of
the Old Colony League
title and a berth in the
state tournament are on
the line.
Allthe Raiders have to do
is beat OCL foe Taunton. A
tie does them no good.
Game time is noon at
Kennedy Memorial Rink
in Hyannis.
Barnstable (6-7-6) missed
opportunities to salt away
a tourney berth Friday
against Sandwich and
Wednesday against once-
beaten Coyle and Cassidy,
losing to Sandwich 6-4 and
to Coyle 3-0.
They need to win to share
the league crown because
Bridge water-Ray nham
used the all-but-unheard-
of tactic of pulling its goalie
in favor of an extra skater
with 40 seconds left in atie
game against Marshfield
two weeks ago. The gamble
paid off and B-R scored in
the final seconds to finish
with aleague mark of 4-1-1.
Barnstable 'sleague record
is 3-1-1.
Sandwich came to
Hyannis Friday and sprung
atrap on the Raiders early,
leaving a forward at the
blue line to stretch the
Raiders defense.
"By the time we picked
up on it, our defense rec-
ognized what was going on,
they stuck two quick ones
at us," said coach George
DeMello.
But the Raiders fought
back -in fact, they fought
back to tie the game on
three separate occasions,
i
but never managed to take
the lead.
Senior Mike Crowley got
one back at 4:48 of the
second period , with assists
going to classmate Joe
Lynch and sophomore Mike
Donoghue. After Sandwich
scored again to make it 3-
1, the Raiders tied it with
two quick strikes, at 10:11
(sophomore Mike Lepore
from Donoghue and junior
Andrew Yingling) and 10:59
(sophomore Corbin Fries
from junior Kyle Kelly and
sophomore George DeM-
ello).
Sandwich was lightning
quickly to take the lead
again after the second in-
termission, scoring at the
0:22 mark.
-
Lepore tied it at 5:14
with the assists going to
Yingling and sophomore
Kyle Phalen, but Sandwich
took the lead for good just
over a minute later.
After the loss, pending
the Coyle game, the eldei
DeMello allowed , "Next!
Friday (against Tauntonj
might be huge."
It is.
