Move from renter to owner good
omen for its 20th anniversary
By David Still II
dstill@barnstablepatriot.com
2006 looks to be agood year
for Olive Chase and her busi-
ness, Casual Gourmet.
For starters, it represents
her 20th
year of operation ,
which will be commemorated
with the purchase of the
former H'nK bakery just a
stone's throw away from the
current operation at the Bell
Tower Mall.
The new location will pro-
vide about 1,500 more square
feet, but more importantly it
willprovide ownership. Chase
said that her landlord has
been good to the business,
but rent is rent.
"We've been looking for a
permanent home for a while,"
Chase said.
Casual Gourmet has moved
twicebefore,eachtimestaying
inCentervilleandjust acouple
hundred feet away. Opening
first in the Centerville Shop-
ping plaza next to Dowling
optical, the business moved
to the corner spot (what' s
now Dunkin Donuts), then
in 1995 to the Bell Tower Mall
location.
"We've moved 300 feet at a
time," Chase said.
The Catania Hospitality
Group, which owns and oper-
ates Heath 'N Kettle, among
other properties, decided to
get out of the bakerybusiness,
Chase said. A call to Catania
Hospitality Group was not
returned by press time.
While the bakery is going
away, Chase said that she';
hired most of those wh<
worked there. Some are stay
ing on with the Cataniagroup
which means that there wil
be few people out of work a!
a result of the change.
"We've been bursting out o
the seams here for a coupli
of years," Chase said in ar
interview Tuesday.
"In the dead of winter,'
Chase said she employs abouf
40 people. That more thari
triples in season, moving td
the 130-140 range.
The small retail opera*
tion will remain, but Casual
Gourmet's bread & butter ii
found in functions.
"We're caterers,"Chase said
definitively.
Chase is also adding a goocj
number of the bakery's em]
ployees , as Casual Gourmet
will provide the specialty
cakes for the Catania Group's
restaurant and hotel operas
tions.
Chase is not unfamiliai
with H'nK, having workec
as general manager for the
downtown Hyannis locatior
for five years.
The new location will bej
renovated through March*
with plans to open sometime
in April. In the meantime^
Chase expects nointerruption;
in operations. !
