MORAL READINGS.
A friend latel y placed in my hands , 1lie private
diary of a youthfu l victim of consumption , who but a
few months ago was laid away to rest. She passed
away with the flowers of parl y iiutumn ,and like them
her life had been a constant emission of sweetness
mid purity. A favorite of all , she was surrounded
by an atmosp here of love and gentleness. Posses-
sing n noble mind , which was nol left uncultivated ,
ahe was fitted for usefulness in any sphere.
A few years were spent in leaching, eie she was
wooed and won by one who appreciated her gentle
nntuieand goodness of heart. Time sped , and a
mother 's joys and cares were hois. Dearl y she
loved her home ,her friends ,her joyous little , prat ller ,
yet she entrusted them to Him , whose they we.re.
ami turned away from earth to the purer joys of
heaven. I will give ii few extracts from her diary
written the year previous to her death :
Jax. 3.—-" Have been alone this evening, spent
the .
time in meditation ,reading and prayer. Find it
j;oocl,to be thus emp loyed ; wh y do 1 neg lect it so
often ? My health is very poor ,yot I desire patience
and fortitude for whatever sufferings may be my lot
to endure , and perfect submission to the will of
God."
Jan. 30.—" I am now reading the life of the Em-
press Josep hine ,and am exceeding ly interested in it.
Sho was no ordinary woman. One of her expres-
sions I quote that 1 may profit by it: "
" Upon the governm ent of ourselves , upon pa-
tience , mildness and furbenranee towards others ,our
happiness and success in life must mainl y depend. "
Juse 6.—'' Months have passed , and sickness has
laid mo prostrated upon a couch of pain. Yet God
in his mercy has seen fit lo raise me from it and I
iirn better. In His name will I trust. Have, not
attended church for a long, long time ; how I real-
ize the privilegfi of it , since I am deptived of it. All
nature is now clad in her garments of beauty. Gen-
tle breezes are wafting to my window the fragrant
incense of many flowers , and the heart of the inva-
lid is cheered. How beautiful is earth ! The thoug ht
arises, is heaven more beautifu l ? I know it is , for
there is no sin thousand it is the abode of goodness,
of purity and of God."
' July 11.—" Have to-day had the daguerreot ype
miniature of our dear little Dni ght taken. I am
pleased with it. May the dear boy,who will so soon
be left in a cold world , without a mother to cheer ,
and counsel him , be trained in the way ' he should
go,' and when he is old , may he not depart from it.
Heaven bless the lad."
Aug. 27.—"I am surrounded by dear kind friends,
¦who administer to my many wants. I am gratefu l
for their kindness. May they have their reward. —
How swiftl y the days and weeks are passing ; my
short life is nearl y ended. But v.hat is our life.
compared to eternity ? How incomprehensible the
word , eternity. '"
Sept. 8.—It is autumn again. All nature will
soon wear a different aspect. Flowers will fade ,and
the sero and yellow leaves will soon begin to fall. "
Here her j ournal closed , and she too faded with
the autumnal leaves , iind autumn 's chilling blast now
sweeps them o'er her lowl y grave. Like the sweet
summer flowe,rs,which she loved so well; she dropped
and passed away. Long will the memory of her vir-
tues be enshrined in the hearts of all who knt 'w her
worth. "The memory of the just is blessed.''

The drop that ming les with the flood^-the sand

ever thoug ht of the effect that mi ght be produced
by a sing le word ? " Drop it pleasantl y among a
group, and it will make a dozen happy, to return to
their hqmes to produce , the same effect on :i hundred
perhaps. A bad word may arouse tho indi gnation
or a whole nei ghborhood , it may spread like wildfire
to produce disastrous effects. As no word is lost , be
careful how you speak—speak right ,speak kindl y.—
The influence you may exert by a "life of kindness—
by words dropped among the young and the old—

To Owners, Masters and Builders of Ships,
W
E beg to call your attention "
to a new article for
Shi p's fast ening, which we believ e to be greatl y
superior to any material now used for that purpose—
YELLOW METAL BOLTS.
Although new in this market , they have been in ac-
tive use in all the Engli sh Shi p Yards and Docks for a
long period of time.
The manufacturers, whose agents we are, were in-
duced to make a small quantity last Spring, by the de-
sire, of several shi p-builders here to obtain a sample ot
the m for their own use. The builders who have tried
them , are so enti rely satisfied with their character and
1 worth , that the manufacturers have resolved upon mak-
ing them in large quantities and offering them for sale.
Being firmer tlmn the Copper Bolts , the y bear much
harde r 'driving ; and their composition prevents the
formati on of the verdigris so much complained of as
natural to Copper. Their resistance to corrosion caus-
es them to wear more uniform y and longer than Cop-
per Bolts and they must have the preference over them.
Their present price is about twenty per cent, less
titan Copper. .
We are now prepared to receive orders for all sizes
and kinds used in shi p building, and can furnish an ar-
ticle as perfect as can be made.
We. shall be pleased to show you these Bolts, and re-
spectfull y ask you to examine them at our Store No

She hath her wish—for which in vain
Sh e joined in restless dreams—
" Oh , mother ! is this home again !
How desolate it seems!
Yet all the dear familiar things
Look as they did of yore ;
But , oh ! the change this sad heart brings—
This is my home no more !
" I left thee— like the dove of old
I left th y parent breast—
But on life's waste of waters cold ,
My soul hath found no rest!
And back the weary bird has come,
Its woes—its wanderings o'er;
Ne'er from the hol y ark to roam—
Yet—this is my home no more !
" Oh , mothe r ! sing my childhood tonys ,
They fal l like summ er's rai n
On my warm heart , that vai nl y longs
To be all thine again.
Speak comfort to me ! call me yet
'Thy Mary '—as of yore;
Those words could make me half forget—
That this is home no more.
"Sit near me ! Oh, this hour repa ys
Long years of lonel y pain ;
I feel as if the old bri ght days
Were all come back again.
My heart beats thick with happy drea ms—
Mine eyes with tears run o'er;
Thou 'rt with me, mother ! Oh , it seems
Like home—sweet home once more !
" Oh , Home and Mother ! can ye not
Give back my heart 's glad youth 1
The vision which my soul forgot ,
Or learnt to doubt their truth!
Give back my childhood' s peaceful sleep,
Its aimless hopes restore!
Ye cannot ! Mother let me weep—¦
For this is home no more !'
Thou mourner for departed dreams!

When grief hath troubled the pure streams
Of memory in th y breast !
