CAPE COD CHILDREN'S MUSEUM PHOTO
FARM AND MARKET - Visitors can "drive" this John Deere-inspired
tractor to take their "produce" to market.
From
art and creative
movement to climbing
on a life-sized tree house,
there's plenty to do and see at
the Cape Cod Children's Mu-
seum at in South Mashpee.
Since 1992 the museum has
been a fun place where children
and their families can learn and
play together. The non-profit
organization remains true to its
mission: "to provide a learn-
ing environment that stimu-
lates curiosity and creativity
and imagination and inspires
children and their families to
engage with each other, their
community and the world at
large."
Executive director Barbara
Cotton describes the museum
as a "vibrant facility" designed
around creative and imaginative
activities geared for children
ages 1to 8.
"Cape Cod Children's Mu-
seum is more than just a place
to play," she said. "Children
and their caregivers have an op-
portunity to rune out the elec-
tronics and tune into each other
and the world around them,"
through safe, entertaining,
educational activities, events
and exhibits. "Making the con-
nection between discovery and
learning is what we do best,"
Cotton said.
The only children's museum
on Cape Cod and the surround-
ing area, the museum is open
year-round and attracts 50,000
visitors a year. It's a popular
destination particularly on
rainy days for families who are
looking for indoor activiOties.
People stand out in the rain to
get in, Cotton said.
The museum offers both
pre-registered and daily drop-
in classes such as crafts, art,
literacy, creative movement,
yoga and Science Wonders. The
museum boasts more than 20
hands-on, interactive exhibits
including the colorfully de-
signed farm and market where
children can learn where food
comes from , pick fruits and
vegetables, collect eggs from
the chicken coop and drive
the tractor. They can explore a
submarine that produces real-
life sounds or pretend they are
king or queen of the day in the
castle or a conductor or passen-
ger on a stand-still train. Other
exhibits include a pirate ship,
portable indoor planetarium,
puppet theater, gravity wall,
cafe, music room and a toddler
play area.
In April the museum will
launch a new exhibit, the
Fish Market, where children
and their families can learn
firsthand about marine life,
seafood, aquaculture and the
Cape's fishing industry. Chil-
dren will be able to work on a
fishing trawler with a tide pool
and haul in lobster pots in full
fisherman's gear. The exhibit
will also feature a herring run.
The museum conducts travel-
ing programs such as the Star
Club planetarium and the Little
Sprouts Garden, a program
operated in collaboration with
Coonamessett Farm. It also
sponsors special events.
Kids don't need to be bored
during school vacation week.
The museum is offering a daily
slate of varied classes and activi-
ties from Feb. 16-22. The sched-
ule will feature Movin' with

of directors recently: Adam G.
Chaprales of Centerville, Anto-
nio Santiago III of Cotuit and
