RISING HAWK - Cape Cod Academy's Ned McCutcheon (3) takes it to the
hoop during game play against Sturgis East Feb.10 at CCA.
The
Sturgis Storm showed
strength, but it was the
Cape Cod Academy
Seahawksthat soared to vic-
tory Feb. 10, with the 'Hawks
defeating East 70-56.
The Storm took an early 12-
10 lead after the first quarter,
but the Seahawks owned the
second, tallying 22 points to
Sturgis East's 13 to take a 32-25
lead at the half.
Sturgis appeared on the verge
of a rally in the third, outscor-
ing CCA 15-10, but a huge
fourth quarter in which the Se-
ahawks netted 28 points sealed
the win for CCA.
Leading the way for CCA
was the dynamic duo of Kyle
Ryder and Johnny Hatem, who
each scored 26 points for the
Seahawks, with Ryder netting
a trio of three-pointers, while
Hatem had one.
Henry Zezze had 10 points
for CCA, while Ned McCutch-
eon had five, including a three-
pointer; Noah Holland had two
and Aaron White one.
Jake Tobey was the top
scorer for Sturgis East with 17
points, while Mitch Starr added
12 and Luke Chavalier 10. Kyle
Coolidge had eight, Austin
Rindfuss and Ian Brothers four
each and Jonny Gomes one.
Both teams came up short
later in the week, with CCA
falling to Pope John Paul II
High 65-53, with Sturgis East
falling to Sturgis West 71-61
(see adjacent story). CCA
stands at 11-5 as the regular
season winds up, while Sturgis
East finished at 7-13.
"The kids worked really
hard," said East head coach
Mike Kennedy. "We played
really well for three-and-a-half
quarters, but we just put the
ball up too quickly midway
through the third and they just
ran away with it."
Kennedy was pleased with
his team's defense.
"As a team they had a really
great effort," he said.
CCA head coach Thomas
Ferreira was pleased with his
team's performance against
East.
"It was a great game and a
great win for us after our loss
to Nantucket on Saturday," Fer-
reira said.
Ferreira also deemed the
game a team effort.
"It's always a team effort ," he
said. "Everybody knows we have
Kyle and Johnny, our scorers,
but we need everybody to get
involved for us to be successful."
At press time CCA was
slated to face South Shore
Christian Academy, with the
Seahawks' final game of the i
season set for Feb. 19 at Nan-
tucket. :

: Collyer this week added
i another check to an estimated
$70,000 in his personal contri-
butions to the Aselton Fund for
that last 10 years. The fund was
set up in 1999 in memory of
the former Barnstable patrol-
man who died in the line of
duty in 1983. It.provides schol-
arships for Barnstable graduates
who are entering a criminal
justice or fire science career.
"The Aselton fund couldn't
help kids without Paul," Sgt.
Andrew McKenna said. "Paul
has really vested himself in the
community."
In addition to the Aselton
scholarship, the officers pointed
out that Collyer also contrib-
utes generously to many other
nonprofit organizations on the
Cape, including CHIPs House
in Centerville, the Cape Cod
Regional Enforcement Council,
the Cape Cod Red Cross, Cape
Cod Athletic Club, Mashpee
;
Boosters and others.
Asked why he gives back so
much, Collyer said , "My events
are very successful ," and that
they wouldn't be as success-
ful without all the events and
causes they sponsor. Collyer,
who has homes in Somerville
and Chatham, said he also feels
a strong connection to the Cape
because many of his family
members live here.
"It's a give and take," Tynan
added , noting that Collyer's
events, such as the upcoming
Hyannis Marathon the week-
end of Feb. 21-23 , are "a huge
economic boost to the Cape in
winter. It 's important for local
residents to know that. "
Collyer said the Hyannis
event , which includes a half
marathon and a marathon
relay, will attract 4,400 runners
this year from the Boston area
as well as the Cape. He said he
promotes it as a weekend event
that includes dinners, speakers
such as former Boston Mara-
thon greats Bill Rodgers, Greg
Meyer and Dick Beardsley, and
an exposition. It is also a quali-
fier for the Boston Marathon.

defense when it mattered most
to clinch the win.
"Every time we have Pink
in the Rink we always seem
to start off really slow," said
Barnstable head coach Peter
Nugnes. "It's a really emo-
tional night. A lot of people
on this team care deeply for
the Fries family."
Nugnes said that after his
team started slow, they picked
up their momentum in time to
earn victory.
"I'm proud of the girls," he
said. "It shows their character
and their will to win. That's a
tough team we just played."
No doubt their guardian
angel smiled.
The win boosts Barnstable
to a regular season record
of 12-1-4 and marked their
seventh straight victory as
they prepare for the Falmouth
Classic, which takes place next
week in Falmouth.

WATCHING IT FALL - Sturgis East and West players watch to see if a
shot goes through the net during game play Feb. 12 in Hyannis. West
defeated East 71-61.
CONTINUED FROM PAGEA:12
Luke Chevalier scored a
game-high 26 points for the
Storm, with teammate Jake
Tobey netting 16.
"It was fun , huh?" said West
head coach Kyle Erha. "This
one has been a long time com-
ing for this team. We dropped
the first one to them. [Tonight
we were] down 10 after one,
and won every quarter after
that the rest of the way."
Erha credited his team for
not giving up.
"We just really kept working
away and never let them get
back into it," he said. "I'm so
happy with them right now.
It's been a season of ups and
downs and uneven games, but
we just kept our heads and
kept plugging away."
East head coach Mike
Kennedy said free throws
and rebounds were his team 's
downfall.
; "I think the kids played re-
ally well in the first quarter,"
he said. "[West] hit their free
throws; I don't think we shot
free throws that well. They
rebounded really well; we
didn't rebound that well, and
that's probably the story of the
game."
Both Erha and Kennedy
had high praise for East senior
Chevalier, who sank five three-
pointers in the game.
"I give credit to Luke Cheva-
lier," Erha said. "That kid was
lights out in the first quarter. "
"He's an animal ," Kenned y
said. "He just focused in and
shot the ball really well."
Kennedy also praised the ef-
forts of Matt Delvecchio.
"Defensively he was all over
the court ," Kennedy said. "He
did a great job for us."
West's win was even more
poignant for the team 's seniors ,
who were celebrated at the start
of the game on "Senior Night. "
"We had six of them and
they all played and all contrib-
uted ," Erha said. "To have [the
win] happen on senior night
was a great thing for us and for
them."
West Senior Deikani Cun-
ningham was cautiously happy
about the victory.
"I' m feeling pretty good , but
we have two more we have to
win to make playoffs so I' m
kind of focused on that right
now," he said.
Fellow senior Scott Glynn
couldn 't stop smiling after the
game was over.
"It's the first time we beat
them in our entire career,"
Glynn said. "To do it on
Senior Night is really a great
time. This was probably the
best game we played all year.
We really played as a team. "
Glynn also looked forward
to the team 's remaining games.
"We've still got to come out
tomorrow night and Friday
night ," Glynn said. "If we get
those we get the playoffs, but
if we play like we did tonight I
think we've got a shot."
