P ink doesn't always go with red, but one night a year the Barnstable girls varsity hockey team makes a bold fashion state- ment with the combined col- ors, all in honor of a beloved teammate who passed away in 2009. In their Feb. 12 game against Whitman-Hanson, Barnstable's Red Raiders wore bright pink as they skated in memory of Caroline Fries, a devoted hockey fan and for- mer team manager. Pink was her favorite color. The power of pink proved paramount as the Red Raiders prevailed against the Panthers 4-3, thanks to late-game hero- ics on the ice at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. Playing on the Butler Rink at the HYCC before a crowd of pink-adorned fans, with pink balloons and streamers decorating the glass surround- ing the ice, the Red Raiders faced off against the Panthers, with Barnstable sending in the game's first goal at 9:16 when Meghan Moore capitalized on a pass from Kelley Glennon. The Panthers responded with two goals minutes apart, tempering Barnstable's mo- mentum but not their spirit as the Raiders roared back in the game's final quarter with three goals. After the Panthers went up 3-1, Barnstable 's Lind- sey Phelan scored on assists from Callie Rogorzenski and Brynn Mendes to narrow Whitman-Hanson's lead to 3-2. Less than two minutes later Rogorzenski scored, with assists from Phelan and Catie McShera to tie the game. Amanda Piknick became the hero of the game when she found the net with 3:52 on the clock on assists from Moore and Caroline Spalt , giving Barnstable a 4-3 lead the Red Raiders fought hard to hang onto in the final minutes. Even as the Panthers pulled their goalie in order to add an extra player up front , they couldn't get past the Red Raiders, who stepped up their CONTINUED ON PAGE A13 Pink power I PLEASE j SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS... BEHINDYOU ALLTHE WAY - SturgisWest's Deikani Cunningham (2) shoots a free throw while the majority of West students cheer him on during the Navigators'Feb.12game against Sturgis East. The sound inside the gym at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center Feb. 12 was deafening and it's no wonder; the place was filled to near capacity as Sturgis East and Sturgis West boys varsity basketball teams battled it out on the court. In the beginning it looked like a sure victory for the Storm, but in the end it was Naviga- tors who prevailed , charting a course for victory and hitting it as West trumped East 71-61. It was the second time this season the cross-town rivals faced each other, with the 'Gators seeking to avenge their 62-55 bss of Jan. 16, and doing so with spirit. Spurred on by a packed house and cheerleaders donning their school colors - green and white for the Navigators, blue and white for the Storm - the teams engaged in an impressive and intense competition that kicked off with East taking a 24-14 lead after the opening quarter. That's when the 'Gators truly sunk their teeth into the game, netting 22 points to the Storm's 10 in the second to take a slight 36-34 lead at the break. After spirited performances by both cheer squads and the Sturgis East step dance team, the game resumed with no loss of intensity. The second half belonged to the Navigators as they not only sunk shot, at the hoop, but also proved their prowess at the foul line. While the Storm netted a number of three-pointers, time ran out on any chances of a rally, much to the glee of West fans. Carlo Tashjian led West with 23 points, with teammate Michael Marsh scoring 21. Dei- kani Cunningham and Michael Mondello each added nine points to West's totals.
