Tlte Blind Boy's been at Play, Mothej
BY ELIZA COOK.
The Blind Boy's been at play, Mother,
And merry games we had ;
We led him on our way, Mother,
And every step was glad.
But when we found a starry flower,
And praised its vaiied hue,
A tear came trembling down his cheek ,
Just like a drop of (lew.
We took hi m to the mill , Mother,
Where falling waters made
A rainbow o'er the rill , Mother ,
As golden sun-rays played ;
But when we shouted at the scene,
And hailed the- clear blue sky,
He stood quite still upon the bank ,
And breathed a long, long sigh.
We asked him why he wept, Mother,
Whene'er we found the spots
Where periwinkle crept. Mother,
O'er wild forget-me-nots :
"Ah me !
" he said while tears ran down
As fast as summer showers,
"It is because I cannot see
The sunshine and the flowers."
Oh, that poor sightless boy, Mother,
Has taught me I am blest,
For I can look with joy, Mother,
On all Hove the best ;
And when I see the dancing stream ,
And daisies red and white,
I'll kneel upon the meadow sod,
And than* my God for sight.
YBie Union-—By Longfellow.
[From "The Seaside and the Fireside." In press bj
Ticknor, Reed & Fields : Boston.]
Thou, too, sail on , O ship of State !
Sail on, 0 Union , strong and great I
Humanity with all its fears,
With all the hopes of future years,
Is hanging breathless on thy fate !
We know what master laid th y keel,
What workman wrought thy ribs of steel,
. AVho made each mast, and sail, and rope.
What anvils rang, what hammers beat ,
In what a forge and what a heat
Were shaped the anchors of th y hope !
Pear not each sudden sound and shock ,
'Tis of the wave and not the rock ;
'Tis but the flapp ing of the sail,
And not a rent made by the gale !
In spite of rock and tempest roar,
In spite of falselight on the shore,
. Sail on , nor fear to breast the sea !
Our hearts , our hopes , are all with thee ;
Our hea rts, our hopes, our prayers , our tears,
Ourfaiih triump hant o'er our fears,
Are all with thee—are all with thee !
MORAL READINGS.
[For the Barnstable Patriot.]
•'Peace, toe still."
The solemn shades of ni ght had gathered over the
troubled waves of Galilee. The lightnings flashed
and the lhumluts ioared. A tempest was abroad.
On those billows was tossc-d a fragile bark.
Har dy seamen , whom the wind had roc ked , and
the billows cradled , were pale with fear.
"The waves had beat into the ship, till it was now
full."
That bark contained the most precious burden
that was ever borne on the bosom of the deep ; in it
was treasured the support of a " fallen universe."
He who was the bri ghtness of the Father's glory,
mid the express image of His person, was "asleep
on a pillow; " angels were guarding His slumbers ,
Divi nity insp iring his dreams.
The disci ples awako him and say, " Master , eatest
thou not that we perUh ?"
He arose and " breathed on the billows," say ing,
"Peace , be still. " The " wind ceased.'' The -sea
became as calm and tranquil , as if no storm had ever
disturbed its serenity .
The heavens put on " their coronet of stars.'1 The
tempest retired—and there was a "great calm."
He returned to his pillow , the " dream that was
broken , crept back to His heart "—toil and Suffer-
ing were forgot in the unclouded visions of eter-
nity- Chaklottk.
Wollfleet , Jan. 28, 1850.
It strikes me as the most impressive of all senti -
ments , that " It will be the same a hundred years af-
ter,,this !
" It is often uttered in the form of a pro-
verb, and with the levity of a mind that is not aware
of its importance. A hundred years after this !—
Good heavens 1 with what speed and with what cer-
tainty will those hundred years come to their termi-
nation ! This day will dra w to a close, and a num-
ber of days make on

by the United States. London , and Edinburg h Colleges
of Health ; but being peculiarl y and fortunatel y com-

"Dr. Stephen Jewett :
Dear Sir—I speak-with confidence , having used tht
Elixir in my own jtractice , and I unhesitating ly recommend
it as a safe , va luable and highly useful fami l
y medicine.
I consider it indeed a family medicine , and a remedy
for Coughs, Colds, and that dreaded disease the Croup,
for which it is far superior to any other preparat ion be-
fore the public.
I have used your Health Restoring Bitters in my prac-
tice , and have found them very serviceable in Dpfeji-
sia , Humors, General Debility, and particularl y in Ilubit-
ual Costiveness. I consider it one of the best remedies
in use. Yours , &c. IRA RUSSELL, M. 1

To Owners, Masters and Builders of Ships.
W
E beg to call your attention to a new article for
Shi p's fastening, which we believe to be greatl y
superior to any material now used for that purpose—
YELLOW METAL BOLTS.
Although new in this market , they have been in ac-
tive use in all the English Shi p Yards and Docks for a
long period of time.
The manufacturers, whose agents we are, were in-
duced to make a small quantity last Spring, by the de-
sire of several shi p-builders here to obtain a sample of
them for their own use. The builders who have tried
them , are so entirel y satisfied with their character and
worth , that the manufacturers have resolved upon mak-
ing them in large quantities and offering them for sale.
Being firmer than the Copper Bolts , they bear much
harder driving ; and their composition prevents the
formation of the verdigris so much comp lained of as
natural to Copper. Their resistance to corrosion caus-
es them to wear more uniforml y and longer than Cop-
per Bolts , and they must have the preference-over them.
Their present price is about twenty per cent, less
than Copper.
We are now prepared to receive orders for all sizes
and kinds used in shi p buildin g, and can furnish an ar-
ticl e as perfect as can be made.
We shall be pleased to show you these Bolts , and re-
spectfull y ask you to examine them at our Store, No.

. :respectfull y solicits the patronage of those inter-
ested in navi gation , whenever circumstances render it
necessary that their vessels should be "hauled up for re-
pairs. Said Railway is situated in the safe and com-
modious Bay, known as Lewis ' Bay, and a few rods to
the westward of Baxter 's whnrf , fonrierly known as
Gage's wharf , where vessels can find a spacious and safe
harbor , sheltered from the winds at all seasons of the
year. These facts being a. great inducement, for vessels
to winter here, ev ery facility will be at hand for repair-
ing in the spring, the expense of which the subscriber
pled ges hi mself will not exceed what is usually charged
at other plac es. Competent and skillfu l blacksmiths ,
caulkers , ship-carpenters , ri ggers, artd sail-mak ers, can
be employed at as moderate prices as elsewhere. Ves-
sels wintering in the Bay with the intention of under-
going repair , will be seen to , and their sails stored free
of expense.
Having the interest and convenience of others in
view on ibe one hand , as well as compensation, nett prof it
and making money on the other , the subscriber hopes
that the ex periment will prove a mutual benefit.
