America's Oil
Addiction
Americais addicted to oil. At
least that'swhat President Bush
said in his recent State of the
Union address. In the speech,
the President calledfor the U.S.
to reduce the amount of oil it
importsfrom the Middle East by
75percent by the year 2025. The
commanderinchiefsaidthat the
way to achieve that goal was to
find alternative ways to power
vehicles other than gasoline.
The plan, called the Advanced
Energy Initiative, calls for in-
creasing ethanol production so
it iscompetitive with gasoline as
wellas creating better batteries
for hybridvehiclesandproviding
additional government funds to
research hydrogen as a fuel for
automobiles.

Cadillacwill offer its first hy-
brid vehicle. The hybrid version
of the Cadillac Escalade SUV
willbe offered in the fall of next
year asa2008model. The hybrid
version willhave a25 percent in-
crease in fuel economy over the
gasoline-onlymodel.That would
put its highwayfuel economy at

Volvo has released its first
pictures of its redesigned S80.
The premium sedan will be
offered with a new inline, 232
horsepower,six-cylinder engine
aswellaswith a311horsepower
V-8 engine that is paired with
all-wheel-drive. New features
will include Adaptive Cruise
Control and aCollisionWarning
system that warns the driver
of a possible collision and even
applies the brakes if necessary.
The new Volvo S80 willhave its
North American debut in April
at the New York Auto Show.
It is expected to go on sale in
late 2006.

a pickup to its line up. Industry
magazine Automotive -

Acura has filed a
lawsuit against Lin-
coln.The automak'

Lincoln's new MKX
crossover SUV

to the name of its
crossover SUV, the
MDX. Acura says
that the similarities
between the names
will cause confu-
sion among vehicle
buyers. The Acura
MDX has been on
the market since
2000. Lincoln's
MKX is slated to
go on sale late this
year.

rebadged pickup that was built
by another automaker if the
company decided to proceed.
Suzuki's director of overseas
marketing also said that the
pickup would be a rear-wheel
drive vehicle. Currently the

Lexus GS Gets Top
Crash Score
The Lexus GS earned the top
rating in a side crash by the In-
surance Institute for Highway
Safety. The sedan nowhasfront-
seat-mounted torso airbags
beginning with the 2006 model
year. As a result of the change,
Lexus requested that the Insti-
tute perform the side impact
test earlier than its normal test
schedule. Institute president
Adrian Lund said that many
automakers arerequestingtests
earlybecause of design changes
that they believe will improve
the crash test scores. The Insti-
tute encourages this because it
means new test results will be
released to consum-
ers earlier. While the
Institute purchases
the vehicles it tests
through conventional
means, when a ve-
hicle is tested early
the automaker reim-
burses the Institute
for the copt of the
vehicle.
